Georgia Basketball assistant Wade Mason suspended after altercation
Georgia assistant basketball coach Wade Mason has been suspended indefinitely as first reported by Brandon Sudge for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A person with knowledge of the situation has also confirmed the news to DawgsHQ independently. The suspension stems from a halftime altercation that occurred Wednesday night between Mason and Georgia director of player development Brian Fish.
No statement has been released by Georgia, however the Bulldogs do play Ole Miss tomorrow (Saturday) at which point head coach Tom Crean is expected to address the situation.
Mason joined the Georgia staff in June of 2021 making this his first season in Athens. He previously spent five seasons working at Stephen F. Austin, helping guide the Lumberjacks to the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Stephen F. Austin also won the 2020 Southland Conference regular season crown, winning 28 games in each of those two season. During the 2019-20 season, the Lumberjacks went on the road and upset No.1-ranked Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
In the five seasons he spent at Stephen F. Austin, the Lumberjacks went 104-46 with additional road victories at LSU and Baylor. Mason helped recruit some of the best players on the team including a trio of Georgia natives that played a role in the success of the program. Individually, Stephen F. Austin played collected 10 All-Southland Conference honors during his time, headlined by Kevon Harris winning 2020 Player of the Year and Gavin Kensmil receiving 2020 Newcomer of the Year accolades.

Mason also spent time on staff as an assistant at Oral Roberts from 2012 to 2016 and as a graduate assistant for Oklahoma during the 2011-2012 season. A standout high school player at St. Augustine in New Orleans, La., Mason would go on to play two seasons at Tyler Junior College and two at Tulane, where he helped the Green Wave to an NIT berth in 2000.
Georgia’s basketball season hasn’t gone all too well in 2021-22, losing six straight games with the latest on Wednesday. Overall, the Bulldogs are 6-20 including a 1-12 record in the SEC. They take on Ole Miss, the second-worst team in the league, on Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
