Georgia Basketball back in action after week to regroup
ATHENS, Ga. — Entering the final week of January, Georgia Basketball hadn’t lost back-to-back games but once this season. That came in early November when the Bulldogs fell twice in the Bahamas. Since then, each loss had been met with a response.
Yes, the schedule has gotten tougher, but bouncing back after blowing a double-digit second-half lead against Tennessee to beat South Carolina on the road wasn’t easy. It would’ve been easy to give up against LSU too, needing some last-minute heroics to pull off the win. That came just days after a tough loss at Kentucky.
Now though, Georgia’s been on the wrong end of five straight. The streak started at Florida, falling 102-98 in overtime to the Gators, and the Bulldogs hope to put the streak to bed against those same Gators – only this time, the game is in Athens.
Georgia has had a week off since its last loss, a 78-75 one at Bud Walton Arena to the Arkansas Razorbacks. While Eric Musselman’s team has struggled this season, they didn’t look like it on Saturday, and that’s been the losing streak in a nutshell for Georgia. While it hasn’t been the best display of basketball by the Bulldogs, Georgia has caught teams on the wrong day. Mississippi State made an uncharacteristic amount of shots. South Carolina and Alabama have been two of the best teams in the country. And that Florida game, well, you can chalk up the difference there to the Gators getting out to a fast start early in the game before doing the same in overtime with some strong play by Mike White’s squad in between. It was too much to overcome though.

White hopes that with the time off, his team will come out with a new sense of energy. The NCAA Tournament is likely out of reach, but you can never say never. A win over Florida would look great with the way the Gators have been playing. There’s a couple of Q1 opportunities against Auburn, and games against Vanderbilt, LSU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss are certainly winnable. Then of course there’s the SEC Tournament. For now though, it’s one game at a time. Playing in the postseason in any form would be welcomed improvement in Athens, but the Bulldogs have to get back on track in order to make that happen.
Tip time for Saturday’s showdown with Florida at Stegeman Coliseum is set for 1:00 p.m. ET on the SEC Network. The Gators sit at 17-7 overall, 7-4 in SEC play, and have won back-to-back games including a 16-point victory over Auburn last Saturday. Since mid-January, Florida has won six of its last seven to move safely inside the NCAA Tournament bubble according to ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi, sitting as a 7-seed in his most recent projection.
