Georgia is officially in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. The Bulldogs have earned a No. 9 seed and they’ll take on Gonzaga in the first round. They’re also in the Midwest region where Houston is the No. 1 seed. UGA and Gonzaga will do battle on Thursday in Wichita, Kan.

Mike White‘s team earned its way into March Madness by playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. When the regular season ended earlier this month, the Bulldogs were tied for the most top-10 teams played and they were tops in the country at top-10 teams played on the road. Georgia won a pair of those games at different points in the season. They also had four games against No. 1 seeds on the year — two against Auburn (the No. 1 overall seed) and two against Florida.

UGA knocked off St. Johns 66-63 in November for a win that tavelled with it all season long. The Bulldogs won six in a row after that win to finish off its non-conference play but the SEC wasn’t as kind.

After losing the opener to Ole Miss, Georgia got wins over Kentucky and Oklahoma and entered the top 25 for a week. That didn’t last long as UGA lost seven of the next nine games. It was 4-10 in SEC play when No. 3 Florida rolled into town on February 24. After blowing a big lead, Georgia got a late three from Blue Cain to help lift it over the Gators by a score of 88-83.

That kicked off a four-game win streak for the Bulldogs. They took down Texas and South Carolina on the road and then Vanderbilt at home to end the regular season with a 20-11 overall record and an 8-10 mark in the SEC. Georgia lost to Oklahoma in the first round of the SEC tournament with the Sooners fighting for their tournament hopes and the Bulldogs already in.

True freshman Asa Newell has been a constant for the Bulldogs in his first season, leading the team in scoring (15.3 points per game) and rebounding (6.8 rebounds per game). Silas Demary has also been on fire, 15 points or more in nine straight games.
