It’s officially SEC Media Days week, and that means it’s unofficially football season. That being said, we continue along with our series taking a look at Georgia’s 23 most important players for 2023.

As we’ve stated before, important can have different definitions. Some players’ importance for this season is based on their past performance and ability to repeat that this fall. For others, it’s about their potential and what living up to it would mean for Georgia and its chances at winning a third straight National Championship. Now at No. 12 on our list of most important Bulldogs, wide receiver Dominic Lovett.

Dominic Lovett

Position: Wide Receiver
Class: Junior
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 179 pounds

Hometown (High School): Belleville, Ill. (East St. Louis)
Previous School: Missouri

Georgia added a pair of pass catchers out of the transfer portal last December with the hope being a couple of instant impact players. Dominic Lovett and Rara Thomas both led their respective teams in receiving last year in the SEC and arrive in Athens with expectations to be near the top once again in 2023 for the Bulldogs.

Lovett, a four-star prospect coming out of high school, spent his first two seasons collegiately at Missouri. There he appeared in all 25 games for the Tigers, starting 12 and finishing with over 80 receptions and 1,000 yards.

This past season in Columbia, he finished first on the team with 56 catches and 846 receiving yards, turning that into three touchdowns. The total was good for fourth in the SEC. Lovett led Missouri in receiving in each of the Tigers’ first five games of the season – including a six-catch, 84-yard day against Georgia before exiting with an injury – the only player to do so in the modern era. He also established new career highs (twice on the year) with over 100 yards against Abilene Christian (132), Auburn (102) and South Carolina (148). He was named a First-Team All-SEC selection by the Associated Press for his efforts during the 2022 season.

Lovett brings a unique skillset to the table. Not only is he physically gifted, but he’s experienced enough to know exactly what it takes to succeed in the SEC. Landing Lovett was big. The impact he could have is even bigger. Joining a receiver room that has two of the team’s top five pass catchers from last season – plus the team-leader in Brock Bowers at tight end – Georgia has hopes that it’s passing game will be able to reach heights that haven’t been seen in quite some time in Athens. Lovett only adds to that potential, and is an important piece in accomplishing everything that’s been set out for by the Bulldogs this season considering the added elements and versatility that he brings to the table alongside others.

“Dom’s been able to make some plays down the field. I’ve been very pleased with Dom,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said this spring. “He’s been matched up on Tykee (Smith) and Bull (Javon Bullard) and Joenel (Aguero) a lot, and he’s made some plays on those guys. I’ve been really proud of what Dom’s been able to pick up.”

“What made Georgia the fit was just our standard, how we work, how we practice, our attention to detail,” Lovett told DawgsHQ at David Pollack’s golf event in May. “Doing things the Georgia way. That was what really drew me to Georgia. And staying in the SEC, honestly.”
