SEC Media Days and the start of fall camp are quickly approaching. With that, we’re continuing on in our look at Georgia’s most important players for 2023.

As we’ve stated before, important can have different definitions. Some players’ importance for this season is based on their past performance and ability to repeat that this fall. For others, it’s about their potential and what living up to it would mean for Georgia and its chances at winning a third straight National Championship. Now at No. 13 on our list of most important Bulldogs, offensive lineman Amarius Mims.

Amarius Mims

Position: Offensive Lineman
Class: Junior
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 330 pounds

Hometown (High School): Cochran, Ga. (Bleckley County)

Georgia is expected to have one of the top offensive lines in the country this coming season. That’s in large part because of the three returning starters on the interior, but also because of what is left in the cupboard to fill the shoes at the tackle spots.

Amarius Mims is one of those guys, but he’s far from a new name. Mims played in all 14 of 15 games last season, starting each of the last two in the College Football Playoffs. He played over 30% of the overall offensive snaps, one of seven Bulldog offensive linemen to do so.

Now with the likes of Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon gone, Mims is a full time starter. He moves from that rotational role and is already being looked at as a potential first round pick next spring. That’s because of the natural talent that he has, plus the untapped potential that he can show this season given a greater number of opportunities.

Yes, he’s a “new” starter on the offensive line, and those guys don’t typically make a list like this. However, as we said earlier in the series with Earnest Greene, you don’t typically see “new” starters like this one, and holding the line at right tackle is an important job. Combine the talent and the need, and this one should make sense. Mims is absolutely important to Georgia’s success in 2023.

Know the Quote

“Last year, I grew the most mentally,” Mims said this spring. “You can look at me and kind of tell that I’m a pretty physical guy, but mental was — football is 90% mental, 10% physical in my opinion. You know, I had to grow more mentally than physically.”

“He’s gotten very mature with how he goes about things, just coming into practice, not really taking plays off and things like that,” fellow offensive lineman Tate Ratledge added on Mims. “Just going out there and grinding every day and just really stepping into the shoes that he’s got to fill.”
