SEC Media Days are completely behind us, and with that the focus is very quickly turning to the football field. Georgia fall camp begins in just over a week, and we’re counting down the days with our look at who the most important Bulldogs might be.

As we’ve stated before, important can have different definitions. Some players’ importance for this season is based on their past performance and ability to repeat that this fall. For others, it’s about their potential and what living up to it would mean for Georgia and its chances at winning a third straight National Championship. Racing towards the finish, we’re now at No. 3 on our list of most important Bulldogs, quarterback Carson Beck.

Pressure’s on for Georgia quarterback Carson Beck. Filling the shoes of an all-time great in Athens is no easy task.

Beck has been around the program for four years now. After playing in just five games his first two years combined, Beck saw action in seven this past season – serving as the backup to Stetson Bennett. It was then that he threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns on 26 of 35 passing. He completed five of six passes for 71 yards including an 18-yard score in the season-opener against an Oregon team that finished ranked highly. He also went 5-for-6 against South Carolina, totaling 55 yards and a 28-yard touchdown. Versus Vanderbilt, he completed eight of 11 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns, all a part of his continuation to mature in Georgia’s offense.

Now, in 2023 with Bennett gone, it’s Beck’s job to lose. He’s considered to be the favorite by a wide margin in the quarterback battle against Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton. While no starter has been named, and it’s unlikely Kirby Smart does so at all wanting to see competition amongst the three, Beck’s day during the spring game was impressive enough to have many believing the offense could potentially be even better this year.

Beck threw for 211 yards and a touchdown on G-Day on 13-of-18 passing in the first half with the first team. With the weapons that are around him like Ladd McConkey, Dominic Lovett and Brock Bowers, plus an experienced offensive line to keep him on his feet, the sky seems to be the limit. Needless to say though, if Georgia is to live up to expectations and contend for a third straight National Championship, Beck will have to be more than just a serviceable starter.

Know the Quote

“I’d say I’m content with the way I attacked and approached throughout spring, approached the competition part of it really just trying to focus on myself first and foremost and better myself in the areas I think I can improve,” Beck said after Georgia’s G-Day spring scrimmage. “I think the biggest thing is continuing this connection with the wide receivers. It’s a lot of guys that came in with me and we’ve been throwing since I was a freshman, but the little intricacies and different routes, how to run different things against different coverages and tiny things that will make us better and more explosive on offense … We already started a little bit of that in January and February, but certain days whenever we have off or don’t have a scheduled meeting we’ll come in, come throw by ourselves, no coaches and that’s really where we can attack three or four different routes each time we go out there and throw to perfect the little things.”
