UPDATE: Georgia sets program record with 5 first-round picks
There’s a new program record in Athens for the number of first round picks. The 2021 Georgia Bulldogs have had five players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, topping the previous record of three players picked back in 2018.
That year it was Roquan Smith going 8th overall to the Chicago Bears followed by Isaiah Wynn and Sony Michel both to the New England Patriots at No. 23 and No. 31 respectively. This year, Kirby Smart has Travon Walker, Jordan Davis, Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt to thank for once again beating the previous program-best. Lewis Cine’s selection was icing on the cake.
“That’s an added bonus if it happens,” Smart said during an interview on NFL Network earlier on Thursday. “I’m certainly excited to see these guys, a lot of good players, including a ton of talented offensive players that hope to go off in the next couple of days as well. I’m excited to see these guys, there’s a bunch of them and some of them are even butting heads at the same positions. I’m looking forward to seeing where they go.”
In doing so, Georgia has also tied the program record for most players taken in the first two rounds of the draft. Nick Chubb went in the second round in 2018 to give that draft class four Bulldogs in the first 64 picks. With several stars from the 2021 National Championship team still on the board, it’s likely that that record will be broken too with the three-round record of six in play too.
