We’re down to 60 days until Georgia meets Oregon in Atlanta, and we’d be remiss to not revisit one of the key 60’s in not only Bulldogs history but also in SEC history.

The year was 1984, and the No. 20 ranked Bulldogs were playing host to the No. 2 ranked Clemson Tigers.

The two programs have long been connected because of proximity and had traded blows in both 1978 and 1981, and matchup in 1984 served as the rubber match for the two.

Again, it proved to be a contest of throwing haymakers, with both programs bringing it down to the wire.

With just eleven seconds left on the clock and the score knotted at 23-23, the Bulldogs turned to senior kicker Kevin Butler, a special teams ace for the program.

Butler was tasked with a seemingly impossible task — a 60 yard field goal to seal the win over the nation’s No. 2 team.

All he did was deliver in spades, knocking it down and securing victory for the Bulldogs.

Of course, Larry Munson was on the call and came through just as strongly.

Following the game, Vince Dooley was quick to shout out his star specialist:

“It was a miracle, a real miracle. And the reason it was a miracle was because this team had to fight back time after time against a great Clemson football team. They had us down and almost out, but to our credit our team never lost faith, stayed with it, kept fighting and found a way to win,” Dooley said per the Washington Post’s John Ed Bradley. “And what can I say about Kevin Butler? His 60-yard field goal not only won the game, but it tied an SEC record. The only thing I can say is that he did it again.”

Butler’s kick is still the Georgia mark and tied for an SEC record and will go down in annals of Georgia football for as long as the game is played in the Classic City.
