With just 50 days until Georgia kicks it off against Oregon, we’re looking back on the heroics of an unlikely No. 50 for the Bulldogs.

We could’ve certainly gone with Warren Ericson, who’s headed into his senior season and has been a frequent feature on the offensive front for the Dawgs.

But we’re turning the clock back to 2008.

While familiar names such as Matthew Stafford, AJ Green, and Knowshon Moreno provided their usual impactful plays, it was a sophomore linebacker who made the most noise for the Bulldogs’ defense against the Bayou Bengals.

Stafford contributed 249 yards and two touchdowns, including one to Green. Moreno would also put together a stellar performance with 163 yards on the ground and a 68-yard touchdown.

But in Tiger Stadium that evening, Darryl Gamble would make his name known in a big way, twice picking off LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee and housing both interceptions.

They would be the lone two picks of Gamble’s season, but they would help spur the Bulldogs to a 52-38 victory against the defending National Champions.

Gamble would finish his career in Athens with three total interceptions, to go along with 160 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and two sacks.

From Georgia, Gamble would go on to be an undrafted free agent for the San Diego Chargers, where he would spend one year.

After a year with the Washington Redskins on the practice squad, Gamble’s NFL career would end.

But regardless of how things went at the next level, Dawg fans will always hold a spot for him in for his work in Baton Rouge.
