Georgia Bulldogs Countdown to Kickoff: 57 Days
We’re just 57 days out of Georgia kicking it off with the Oregon Ducks, and we’ve taken a few different angles this week, from players on the roster to stats to historic moments.
Today, we’re turning our attention back to the Championship season in 2021 and a player no longer on the Georgia roster who helped to put a nail in the coffin on the way to the trophy.
It was the second quarter of the Orange Bowl, and the Dawgs were leading handily, already up by 17 points and feeling strong.
That’s when Stetson Bennett unleashed a strike to Jermaine Burton just before the half, resulting in a 57-yard touchdown for the Bulldogs and putting the Dawgs ahead by a comfortable 27-3 moving into the half.
While Bennett will be back with the Bulldogs for the upcoming campaign, Burton decided to cast his lot in the transfer portal.
He ended up switching divisions within the SEC and finding a new home with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
It wasn’t great news for the Bulldogs, as Burton played in 14 of 15 games with eight starts under his belt on the 2021 campaign.
He also finished the year with almost 500 yards on the season, so that’s not ideal either.
The Bulldogs have to be sharpening their teeth at the prospect of seeing Burton again if both teams see themselves again in the SEC Championship as they did last season.
Have to think Kelee Ringo, Chris Smith, and the lot in the secondary will know a bit about how to handle him well if and when that’s the case.
Still, the Dawgs have Burton to thank for a key moment in the playoff run, so hats off for day No. 57.
