Georgia Bulldogs Countdown to Kickoff: Day 6

There are just six days between now and when the Georgia Bulldogs play. That gives us a chance to look at Sean Jones’s Rocky Top return.

Like so many plays during this era of Georgia football, I remember Larry Munson’s radio call much more distinctly than the play on television.

At least, it’s what I think of first.

“SEAN JONES GOING ALL THE WAY! SEAN JONES ALL THE WAY!”

The defending SEC champions made their way to Knoxville for a scrap. And they also entered the building for the first time since David Greene connected with Verron Haynes on that Hobnail Boot moment.

So Rocky Top was rockin’. Georgia, ranked 8th in the country according to the Associated Press, had to fend off a hungry Volunteers team with revenge on its mind.

They weren’t about to let that left-handed quarterback embarrass them on the goal line again.

Unfortunately for the Vols fans in that packed out Neyland Stadium, it was their own offense that cost them on the goal line.

SEAN JONES ALL THE WAY!

Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen and running back Jabari Davis set the stage for a long Georgia Bulldogs victory sprint

With a first-and-goal from the Georgia three yard line, trailing 13-7 right before the half, Clausen turned to hand the ball off to Tucker High School alum Jabari Davis.

The exchange went about as smooth as a trek up Rocky Top.

Once the ball found the turf, Sean Jones found the ball.

I’ll always remember how Larry Munson called Jabari by his first name. Not ‘Tennessee fumbled!’ but “JABARI FUMBLED!”

As the listener of Georgia Bulldogs football games, it was your job to know who was who, and which team they all played for.

Once Sean Jones reached down for the scoop, he finished his Rocky Top run with a score.

Not that he had much competition.

The Dawgs gave him a convoy all the way from Knoxville to Athens, it felt like

“SEAN JONES GOING ALL THE WAY, SEAN JONES ALL THE WAY!” Munson hollered.

He made his legacy in Knoxville, you could argue.

Between Herschel Walker’s debut and the Hobnail Boot, was there a bigger game on Munson’s schedule?

Obviously, Lindsay Scott was big, as was all that sugar in the atmosphere at Auburn.

But there’s definitely some depth to Munson’s career thanks to plays made at Neyland.

The Sean Jones call doesn’t come to mind right off the bat for many a Dawgs fan, and I get it.

Georgia won that game in a 41-14 demolition after Jones’s return stole all the air out of the building as the first half expired.

But it’s another Munson call in that sea of orange that stands out from my youth.

And unlike Jabari Davis and Casey Clausen, I plan to hold on to it for a while.
