Georgia has two of top safeties in country with Chris Smith, Tykee Smith
Another day, another Dawg. As On3 continues its rundown of the most impactful players in all of College Football ahead of the release of the Impact 300, Georgia’s Christopher Smith and Tykee Smith were both named among the top 10 impact safeties in the sport.
Christopher Smith started 11 of the 12 games he played in for Georgia last season, finishing with 35 total tackles, four pass breakups, three interceptions and two quarterback pressures. He played ever defensive snap in three of the Bulldogs’ biggest wins of the season against Clemson, Tennessee and Alabama. Versus the Tigers, he had the only score of the game with a pick-six to put Georgia ahead 7-0 before halftime. The Bulldogs would hold on to win 10-3 with a strong defensive effort. He also had an interception in the National Championship win over the Crimson Tide, made a career-high seven tackles and threw a key block for Kelee Ringo on his way into the end zone on the game sealing pick six.
As for Tykee Smith, things didn’t go as well for him in his first season with the Bulldogs. A transfer from West Virginia who had earned All-American honors during his time with the Mountaineers, Smith suffered a preseason foot injury that kept him from playing in the first five games of the year. He appeared briefly for the Bulldogs against Auburn before tearing his ACL the following week in practice.

Both Christopher and Tykee should have opportunities to play important roles for Georgia this season. Christopher is one of a few returning starters for the Bulldogs on the defensive side of the ball. Meanwhile, with the departure of Lewis Cine, Tykee could step into his step and play alongside Chris. He’s also capable of playing the STAR position, one where there might be some competition for playing time with William Poole back. Either way, expect these two top safeties in College Football to factor into Georgia’s plans in the secondary this season.
