Georgia clinches series with dominant 17-2 victory over Florida

Georgia has won both of it’s SEC series to start the season. The No. 4 Bulldogs beat No. 13-ranked Florida 17-2 on Saturday after taking down the Gators 8-7 on Friday, clinching the three-game set.

Brian Curley got his first start of the season and was masterful, tossing five scoreless innings of two-hit, five-strikeout ball. He also walked a couple. Georgia blasted six home runs in the contest. Center fielder Devin Obee can claim credit for two of those.

Wes Johnson’s crew, now 23-2 on the season and 4-1 in the SEC, got started early. Robbie Burnett delivered a two-run home run in the first, driving in Henry Hunter to give the Diamond Dawgs a 2-0 lead. Georgia added two more in the second one another two-run jack, this one from Brennan Hudson. It was his first home run and first hit of the season.

The Bulldogs tacked on another in the third on an RBI double from Christian Adams to make it 5-0. They got another in the fourth on a solo blast from Kolby Branch to make it 6-0.

Another crooked number came in the top of the fifth as Christian Adams belted a two-run home run and followed with his first of the day, making it 9-0 Georgia. Florida answered in its half of the sixth inning with a run but Justin Byrd pitched around a couple of defensive miscues to limit the Gators to just one run.

Georgia plated two more in the seventh when Hunter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Burnett followed with a walk, driving in another to make it 11-2. Florida plated one in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the run rule. Hayden Yost belted a solo home run to cut into the lead.

After posting just its second scoreless inning of the day in the eighth, Georgia went wild in the top of the ninth. Six Bulldogs touched the plate in the inning. Ryan Zaborowski drove in two with his second double of the game. Tre Phelps also plated a pair with a double and Obee capped off the scoring with a two-run shot to center to make it 17-2.

Zach Harris pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit. Georgia pitching scattered seven hits and walked just two in the victory. UGA will take aim at the sweep on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised by SEC Network+.
