Georgia clinches spot in SEC Championship game for fourth straight season
Georgia entered Saturday hoping it could maybe get some help from around the world of College Football and climb closer to a chance to host a first-round College Football Playoff matchup. Now, after a wild slate of games, the Bulldogs have clinched a spot in the 2024 SEC Championship game.
It’s the fourth straight years Georgia has clinched a spot in the game and it’s the seventh out of the last eight. That game is set for December 7 with a 4 p.m. ET kickoff. It’ll be broadcast by ABC. The winner of the Texas at Texas A&M matchup next weekend will face Georgia in Atlanta.
A few dominoes had to fall to make it happen, all while or after Georgia took down UMass 59-21. Alabama was taken down by Oklahoma 24-3 in Norman, thrusting the Bulldogs back into the SEC Championship game mix.
Then Auburn took down Texas A&M in quadruple overtime. The Aggies entered the day with two losses and ranked No. 15 but only one of those was in league play. Had they won that game, there was a scenario where Texas and Texas A&M would play next weekend and then again in the SEC Championship game the following week with a Longhorn victory. Now those two teams will be reigniting a rivalry that has been on hiatus for 12 years and it’ll be for a chance to play in Atlanta.

Georgia was ranked No. 10 in the latest College Football Playoff ranking and seeded No. 11 in the bracket projection due to Boise State’s status as the fourth-highest-ranked projected conference champion. Ole Miss lost at Florida earlier in the day, knocking the Rebels out of contention and clearing a spot for Georgia to move up. That game didn’t impact the Bulldogs’ standing in the SEC.
Indiana’s convincing loss to Ohio State, also in the noon wave of games, likely clears the way for UGA to rise another spot in the playoff rankings. Alabama losing to Oklahoma moves the Bulldogs up yet another spot. Georgia will likely be seventh with a projected seed of eighth when the new rankings come out on Tuesday.
The winner of the SEC Championship game will get a first-round bye and a matchup in the Sugar Bowl against the winner of a first-round playoff matchup.
