Georgia cornerback Julian Humphrey plans to enter transfer portal
Georgia cornerback Julian Humphrey is planning on entering the transfer portal. The third-year sophomore out of the Houston, Texas area began the season for the Bulldogs as a defensive starter. Struggles forced him out of the lineup, and on Saturday, he did not play in UGA’s win over Georgia Tech. Now, Humphrey tells On3 he’ll be looking to continue his collegiate career elsewhere.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the man above for everything he has done for me, and I will forever be grateful for everything. I also wanted to say thank you to all of the loyal UGA fans along the way,” Humphrey wrote in a social media statement. “With that being said, after careful consideration, I will be entering my name in the portal with 2 years left of eligibility.”
In 11 games this season, starting 10 of those, Humphrey totaled 10 tackles and four pass breakups. He also made three appearances in 2022 during his first year on campus and was a rotational player for UGA last season, playing in nine contests making 11 stops before an injury ended his campaign.
Humphrey flirted with entering the transfer portal this time a year ago. He announced plans to enter although he never actually did. Less than 24 hours later, Humphrey reversed course.
A four-star prospect out of Clear Lake High School and the No. 82 overall player in the Class of 2022 (No. 10 cornerback per On3 Industry Ranking), Humphrey will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.

The transfer portal has yet to officially open. That’ll happen in just over a week on Monday, December 9th after conference championships occur around the country this upcoming weekend. Georgia will be a part of those taking on Texas Saturday (4:00 p.m. ET, ABC) in Atlanta for the SEC title. After that, the Bulldogs are likely headed to the College Football Playoff.
Based on the timing of his announcement, it’s safe to say that Humphrey’s future with Georgia this season is in question, although head coach Kirby Smart will speak with reporters Sunday evening when he’ll more than likely be asked for comment on the status of the redshirt sophomore.
More on the transfer portal…
The NCAA student-athlete transfer portal launched in 2018. It marked a change from when student-athletes had to get a release from their school to transfer to another and they could be limited as to where they transferred. The portal allows student athletes to simply notify their current school and its compliance department that they intend to move on to another program.
Last season, Georgia lost 21 scholarship players to the portal, watching several end up at power conference programs around the country. The Bulldogs did add to their talent however, as they’ve done before. Adding to the likes of Lawrence Cager, Tre McKitty, Derion Kendrick, Tykee Smith, Dominic Lovett and others that have joined the program in the past, UGA brought in Trevor Etienne, Colbie Young, London Humphreys, Ben Yurosek, Xzavier McLeod and others that have had an impact on the Bulldogs’ 2024 campaign.
