Georgia drops fourth straight game in 30-point rout at Florida
Wins are tough to come by on the SEC hardwood these days and Georgia has learned that lesson over the past two weeks. The Bulldogs dropped their fourth straight on Saturday to No. 5 Florida by a score of 89-59.
Mike White’s team is winless since beating ranked opponents Kentucky and Oklahoma in the same week. Those wins made Georgia 2-1 in the SEC and earned it a No. 23 ranking in the AP poll. Since then the Bulldogs have lost lopsided games at Tennessee, which was close at the half, and Florida. They also lost a two-point game at home to No. 1 Auburn and fell by three at Arkansas earlier this week after a second-half collapse.
Georgia turned it over 14 times in the first half while the Gators shot just under 67 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. It allowed the Gators to carry a 25 point lead into half time and Georgia was never able to get it closer than 19 in the final 20 minutes.
Freshman forward Asa Newell, UGA’s leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first half but finished with eight. He also had six rebounds. Georgia had just one player in double figures and that was sophomore guard Blue Cain, who had all 10 of his points in the first half. The Bulldogs finished with 18 turnovers in all.
Meanwhile Florida had five players in double figures and three players with 16 or more points. Sophomore forward Thomas Haugh turned in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Walter Clayton Jr. and Alijah Martin led all scorers with 17 points. Those two combined for eight assists as well.

The crucial stretch of the game for Georgia came around the 15-minute mark in the first half when the Bulldogs trailed by three. Over the next five minutes, White’s crew turned the ball over five times and the Gators put together an 11-2 run to grab a 12-point lead. Georgia never got it under double figures after that.
Through their first seven SEC games, the Bulldogs have squared off against six teams that were ranked at the time. They’ve also had to go on the road four times in seven games. Three of Georgia’s next four games are at home. It hosts South Carolina on Tuesday and will be at No. 4 Alabama next weekend.
Then LSU and Mississippi State come into town the following week. The contest against MSU will kick off a stretch of five straight games against teams that are currently ranked inside the top 25.
