For the first time since 2020, Georgia Football finds itself with a second loss before the end of the regular season. Not coincidentally, for the first time since that season, the Bulldogs also find themselves outside the top 10 of the AP Poll.

Released on Sunday after UGA’s loss to Ole Miss, Kirby Smart’s squad is ranked No. 11. Oregon claimed all 62 first-place votes followed by Ohio State, Texas, Penn State and Indiana in a Big Ten dominated top portion of the poll. Georgia’s next opponent, Tennessee, comes in at No. 6 while its last opponent, Ole Miss, is just ahead of the Bulldogs at No. 10. BYU, Notre Dame and Alabama round out the top-10 in between the Volunteers and Rebels.

Of course with the first College Football Playoff rankings released last week, the AP and Coaches polls don’t quite carry the same weight. UGA debuted at No. 3, seeded second as the top-ranked SEC squad and projected conference champion, but the Bulldogs will without a doubt drop. How far? The Coaches dropped Georgia eight spots to No. 10 while it was a nine-spot fall in the AP. A similar plummet in the CFP Rankings very well could find UGA on the outside looking in for the time being.

There’s an emphasis on “for the time being” considering the opportunity that’s ahead for Georgia. An ESPN featured matchup against Tennessee this Saturday offers a chance for the Bulldogs to bounce back. While the second loss might keep Georgia out of the SEC Championship Game, it’s a later date in Atlanta that is the big prize UGA has its eyes on – the January 20th National Championship Game.

“It’s on to the next. I mean, welcome to the SEC, baby,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart told reporters after the 28-10 loss. “I mean, I said when the season started that it was going to be the toughest schedule we’ve ever had in the SEC with the addition of the Texas game on top of all the others we had to play. It’s extremely tough. It’s difficult. I mean, the outlook of going to those four road games, the Kentucky, the Texas, the Alabama, and this one, we knew it was going to be really tough. And as you go through the season you get injuries. I mean, they’ve got injuries too. Everybody’s got injuries. It just makes it tough. It’s tough, but you know what, our future’s in front of us. We’ve got a big game next week. We’ve got to go out, and we’ve got to find a way to execute at a higher level.”

Kickoff time for Georgia-Tennessee is set for 7:30 p.m. on ABC. UGA was listed as an early 8.5-point favorite over the the Volunteers, however, given the results of the weekend, that line is expected to change some.
