Georgia enters championship weekend at No. 1
In the final rankings release before championship Saturday, Georgia remains atop the College Football Playoff poll. The No. 1 ranked Bulldogs are joined by Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati in the four-team bracket with Oklahoma State and Notre Dame just on the outside looking in. Ohio State, Ole Miss, Baylor and Oregon round out the top 10 ranked 7-10.
Dominoes fell across the country last weekend with Michigan upsetting Ohio State, who was ranked No. 2 just behind the Bulldogs last week. Then, Alabama struggled to beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl, and Oklahoma State kept its Playoff hopes alive with a win over Oklahoma. Now, headed into conference championships this weekend, the Playoff picture is a little bit clearer.
No. 2 Michigan plays No. 15 Iowa for the Big 10 Championship at 8:00 p.m. ET on Saturday while No. 4 Cincinnati plays No. 16 Houston on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET in the AAC Championship Game. No. 5 Oklahoma State will take on No. 9 Baylor for the Big 12 Championship at 12:00 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, No. 6 Notre Dame is off and has no opportunity to change its resume.
Further down in the rankings, where things don’t necessarily matter quite as much, Georgia has a couple of teams that it faced earlier this season included. Clemson, who Georgia beat 10-3 to open the season on September 4, rises three spots from 23 to 20 after beating its in-state rival South Carolina. The Tigers finish the regular season 9-3 with a chance to pick up their 10th win in what many would consider a “down year” in the bowl game.
Then, two teams that the Bulldogs defeating in October, Arkansas and Kentucky come in at No. 22 and No. 23 respectively. Georgia beat Arkansas 37-0 in the fifth game of the season before beating Kentucky 30-13 two games later. Arkansas beat Missouri 34-17 on Friday while Kentucky beat Louisville 52-21 the next day.
