Georgia basketball’s road woes continued on Saturday as they fell to at No. 4 Alabama by a score of 90-69. The Bulldogs were as close as give points late in the first half but the game got out of hand after a key sequence in the first 10 minutes in the second half.

Freshman forward Asa Newell led all Georgia scorers with 16 points. He had 10 of those in the second half and finished with seven rebounds and five steals. Four other Bulldogs were tied at seven points as the team shot just 35.5 percent from the field and a putrid 17.4 percent from three. They also hit just 47.8 percent of their 23 free throw opportunities.

Cold shooting is a large reason the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on 20 Alabama turnovers. The Crimson Tide’s inability to take care of the basketball allowed the Bulldogs stay in it for the entire first half, despite building a 14 point lead.

Georgia pulled to within five points with 1:53 left in the first half. Alabama ended the period on a 6-0 run with all of those points coming at the free throw line.

The second half started with the Bulldogs making shots but Alabama was also connecting. Trailing by nine points with under 15 minutes left in the game, junior forward RJ Godfrey was whistled for a foul as he went to the floor for a loose ball, attempting to earn the tie-up and jump ball.

Alabama got possession of the basketball and missed on the ensuing shot attempt. The Bulldogs went to the floor for the rebound and an Alabama player went to the floor with him, a very similar play as moments before. This time the play was ruled a tie-up, jump-ball, and Alabama retained possession once again.

Bulldog head coach Mike White, still livid with the first call, pushed the officiating crew too far and drew a technical. Alabama hit both free throws and made the basket after retaining possession, grabbing a 13 point lead. After a Georgia miss, the lead ballooned to 16 points and the Crimson Tide continued to pull away. They lead by as many as 26 before Georgia went on a 5-0 run to end the game.

Next up for Georgia is a virtual must-win at home vs. LSU on Wednesday. Tip is set for 9 p.m. on The SEC Network. The Bulldogs will then host Mississippi State next Saturday with tip schedule for 6 p.m.
