Georgia takes down Mississippi State 41-31
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia has its fifth win of the season after taking down Mississippi State 41-31. The Bulldogs controlled much of the game but couldn’t build on a 24-point third quarter lead.
Carson Beck completed a career high 36 passes on 48 attempts for 459 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The 459 yards is also a career high for the fifth year quarterback. Arian Smith caught five passes and set a career high in receiving yards with 134. He also had a touchdown.
Mississippi State got the ball first and scored the first points of the game but it didn’t come right away. The Maroon Bulldogs had to punt on their first possession but Georgia gave it right back on its second play as a Beck pass intended for Dominic Lovett was batted into the air at the line of scrimmage and intercepted at the UGA 26-yard line.
The MSU offense moved in the wrong direction, losing three yards but Kyle Ferrie came on and hit a 47-yard field goal to open the scoring. Georgia evened it up on its next possession as Peyton Woodring connected on a 45-yard field goal to cap off a 38-yard drive.
The Bulldogs then went on a short run, scoring the next 10 points. Branson Robinson ran one in from five yards out and the PAT made it 10-3 in favor of UGA. Woodring connected on his second field goal of the day later in the second quarter, pushing Georgia’s lead to 13-23.
Two explosive pass plays got Mississippi State into the end zone with just under nine minutes left in the second quarter. Michael Van Buren found Kelly Akharaiyi for a 24-yard touchdown. Ferrie hit the PAT and Georgia’s lead shrunk to 13-10.
The Bulldogs responded with their best stretch of the day, scoring game’s next 21 points and taking a 34-10 lead. All three scores came on Beck throws as he hit Dillon Bell, Lawson Luckie, and Smith to grow the Georgia lead.
Then it was Mississippi State’s turn to make a move. The Maroon Bulldogs found the end zone on their next two possessions. They got a 19-yard run from Johnnie Daniels to cut the lead to 17 points and then a Van Buren toss to Davon Booth on fourth down to take the lead down to just 10 points. In the middle of all that, Beck threw his second interception of the day. It came deep in MSU territory as he tried to hit Luckie in the end zone but the route was jumped.

Georgia was able to regain control of the game in the fourth quarter. After the offenses traded punts, the Bulldogs put together a 16-play drive that took up over seven minutes of game clock and ended with a touchdown run from Trevor Etienne. That made the score 41-24 in favor of the home team but the scoring wasn’t over.
Mississippi State got the ball back and used nine plays to go 75 yards with Van Buren finding Akharaiyi for a 35-yard touchdown. The PAT cut Georgia’s lead to 10 at 41-31 and that’s how the game would end as MSU’s onside kick attempt was fielded by UGA.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Austin to take on No. 1 Texas. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
