One of the ways you know that the SEC’s “it just means more” line is true is how much excitement surrounds the reveal of each year’s schedule. It’s on display again Tuesday night with Georgia learning what its 2023 slate will look like.

The schedule is favorable for a second straight year. It also features something we’ve never seen before and a team visiting Athens for the first time since 2012. Below, DawgsHQ delivers what we took away from our look at UGA’s 2023 slate.

New Georgia vs. Auburn still doesn’t feel right…

The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry will be played in September for the first time ever. It felt weird in October the past two seasons. It’s going to feel downright bizarre to visit Jordan-Hare Stadium in September.

A five-Saturday September is mostly to blame, we get that, yours truly has frozen his backside off more than a few times covering and attending this game when it was played in November. It’s not worth ranting over, but this game should be played in the 11th month. That’s where it belongs but no reason to fault the Tigers for trying to dodge having to play the sports two strongest programs in the same month every season.

Home stands and road trips…

You’ve heard of streaky players in various sports. Well, this schedule is streaky. Georgia begins the season with four consecutive home games before playing Auburn on the road. The Bulldogs have five home games in the first half of the regular season.

Then comes a home-game drought. When Georgia tees it up against Kentucky on October 7, that’ll be the last home game until nearly a month later, November 4 vs. Missouri. The Bulldogs will play at Vanderbilt, enjoy a bye week, then take on Florida in Jacksonville for The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail party — yeah, I said it.

Then there’s two straight home games vs. Missouri and Ole Miss before ending the season with two straight games on the road. I’ll add the caveat that Bobby Dodd Stadium isn’t much an away game considering how UGA hasn’t lost there since before the turn of the century.

One to watch: Georgia at Tennessee…

Fully understand that you can’t tell a Georgia fan anything these days. I also understand why that is. After breaking a 41-year title drought, the Bulldog faithful are flying high. With that said, the matchup with Tennessee on Rocky Top is one to anticipate.

Josh Heupel has done a good job with the Vol program in a short amount of time. The arrow is pointing up. I can tell you right now that Georgia will be favored. It’d even put good money on the Bulldogs being favored by two scores. But if Tennessee continues to trend up under Heupel, this game could get interesting. A lot could depend on which team is healthiest in Week 12.
