ATHENS, Ga. — It’s Saturday in Athens, and this week it’s the SEC opener. Top-ranked Georgia takes on South Carolina in a battle between border rivals.

The Bulldogs are 2-0, but they haven’t had to take on a Power Five opponent. In the season-opener, they took down UT-Martin from the FCS level by a score of 48-7 before a 45-3 win over Ball State last week. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks are 1-1 having lost to North Carolina before a bounce back win over Furman.

“Turning the page to an SEC opponent at our stadium, 3:30, CBS game. It seems like most of the years, Georgia opens with South Carolina. This game hasn’t always been that since I’ve been here, but it’s always been early in the schedule as it is this year,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said this week. “Got a lot of respect for Shane and his staff, the staff he’s assembled. They do a tremendous job with their players. They play really hard. Got a lot of respect for those guys. I know they tend to have players from our state and we tend to have players from their state. It’s always a really important game when it comes to playing  a school that’s this close geographically to you. I know both teams will be up for the game, should be a great atmosphere. Hope our fans can give us a homefield advantage for this game.”

Kickoff time today at Sanford Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

Pregame

  • David Daniel-Sisavanh the first team safety next to Malaki Starks during skeleton 7-on-7 and full 11-on-11 work.
  • Bullard announced as a starter on the video board. Again, read into that what you want because it certainly contradicts what we’ve seen during warmups.
  • While Javon Bullard is in uniform, he stood off to the side while the defensive backs went through drills. Read into that what you want.
  • DeNylon Morrissette in uniform today, first time this season.
  • Pearce Spurlin in street clothes. Others in that category include Austin Blaske, Chris Peal, Josh Miller, EJ Lightsey and Lawson Luckie.
  • Tate Ratledge wearing the 77 jersey this week.
  • Crowded sideline of recruits out there including Dylan Raiola, KJ Bolden, Joseph Jonah-Ajonye and Justin Williams. Jadon Perlotte in attendance as well just off a quick glance of the recruits.
  • Marvin Jones Jr. is in sweatpants watching as some Georgia defenders warm up. Don’t see any sort of a brace, boot, etc. on him.
  • Ladd McConkey not dressed out and, as previously reported, will not be playing today.
  • Javon Bullard, who suffered a sprained ankle last week and left the game early, is out of the field going through initial warmups. Ankle appears to be wrapped but there’s no noticeable limp. We’ll have to wait and see if he plays, but certainly looking like a possibility.
