Georgia adds Travaris Robinson to defensive staff
A veteran assistant coach with a plethora of SEC experience is joining the Georgia coaching staff in an on-field role. Georgia announced Saturday that Travaris Robinson, after spending the past two seasons at Alabama, has been hired to the staff. He’s expected to coach defensive backs.
“We are pleased to announce Travaris Robinson as our new Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart shared in a statement on Saturday morning. “Travaris has 17 years of college coaching experience, including over a decade in the SEC mentoring some of the top defenses statistically in the NCAA.”
The Bulldogs previously had two defensive backs coaches on staff in Will Muschamp, who held the titles of co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, and Donte Williams, who was hired last month to coach cornerbacks. The released statement for Georgia shares that Muschamp will move into an analyst role to “spend more time with his family.”
“We are excited about the addition of Coach Robinson and his family to the University of Georgia, while having the opportunity to retain Coach Muschamp and his family on our staff,” Smart added.
Robinson, 42, played his college ball at Auburn where he was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2002. His coaching career began in 2006 at his alma mater where he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant. He spent the 2008 season at Western Kentucky where he coached defensive backs and moved on to Southern Miss in 2009 where he coached cornerbacks. He had a one-year stint at Texas Tech in 2010 as defensive backs coach.

The 2011 season is when Robinson linked up with Muschamp and the two spent the next 10 years together at three different SEC programs. When Muschamp became the head coach at Florida, he hired Robinson to coach defensive backs. They spent four years in Gainesville and when Muschamp was let go, they went to Auburn where Muschamp coordinated the defense and Robinson continued working with the secondary. That was a one-year stop.
South Carolina hired Muschamp as its head coach in 2016 and Robinson came a long as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. That run lasted five years and Muschamp was fired during the 2020 season. Robinson then spent the 2021 season at Miami before being hired by Alabama.
Robinson has long been considered one of the top recruiters in the Southeastern Conference. He played an integral role in landing five-star prospects for Florida, South Carolina, and Alabama.
