We now know the game time and television assignment for the first Georgia’s first SEC home game of the season. Georgia and Auburn will tee it up on October 8 with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

The 2022 edition of The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry will mark just the eighth time in 127 meetings that the Bulldogs and Tigers have played in October. It’ll mark the fourth straight seasons that those two teams have played in the 10th month of the year. Prior to the 2020 season, there had been four instances in the history of the rivalry and all were prior to 1937. The game will be played on September 30 in 2023.

Georgia is 4-0 on the year with wins over Oregon, Samford, South Carolina, and Kent State. The Bulldogs travel to Missouri for week five. Auburn is 3-1 on the year with wins over Mercer, San Jose State, and Missouri. The one loss came at the hands of Penn State, a 41-12 blowout at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers have LSU on the schedule for week five.

Georgia has owned this storied rivalry in recent years. The Bulldogs have won five straight since Auburn’s home win in 2017. Georgia won the 2017 SEC Championship game and each of the regular-season matchups since.

Sanford Stadium has been a particularly tough venue for the Tigers. Georgia last lost a home game to Auburn in 2005. It has beaten Auburn by an average score of just under 20 points per game in the last five meetings inside Sanford Stadium.

Overall, Georgia is 6-1 against its oldest rival since Kirby Smart took over as head coach. The Bulldogs have also won 14 of the last 17 games since their last home loss against Auburn in 2005.

In addition to the history between these two programs on the gridiron, there is also a lot of crossover both historically and currently. Former Bulldog head coach Vince Dooley attended Auburn and former Tiger head coach Pat Dye, attended Georgia.

UGA running backs coach Dell McGee and offensive line coach Stacey Searels both went to Auburn. Georgia offensive analyst Mike Bobo was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator last season. UGA co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has served in two stints as Auburn’s defensive coordinator in the past 15 years. Auburn linebackers coach Christian Robinson played his college ball at Georgia and was a multi-year graduate assistant in Athens after his playing days were done. Auburn offensive line coach Will Friend also coached at Georgia from 2011 to 2014.

Both Georgia and Auburn will play in primetime on October 1. The Tigers host LSU at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Bulldogs will play at Missouri with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET on The SEC Network.
