Carson Beck, Trevor Etienne land on Maxwell Award watch list
Monday marked the beginning of watch list season across the college football landscape with the Maxwell Football Club releasing its preseason names to know for The Maxwell Award. Given annually to the top player in the sport, two Georgia Bulldogs found their name on the list: quarterback Carson Beck and running back Trevor Etienne.
Beck, a senior out of Mandarin (Jacksonville, Fla.), is entering his second season as the UGA starter at quarterback. After winning the job during preseason camp ahead of the 2023 campaign, Beck finished third nationally and first in the SEC in passing yards with 3,941 on a school-record 72.4% completion rate. He was a finalist for the Manning Award and was named to the All-SEC Second Team by the league’s 14 head coaches.
Expectations are big for Beck this fall. Not only does he have a year of experience under his belt, but also Georgia has surrounded him with plenty of weapons. Etienne is among those.
A transfer from Florida, Etienne produced in a big way for the Gators. Appearing in 24 games, he carried it 249 times for 1,472 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also added 30 receptions, 238 yards and another score as a receiver while returning kicks for the Gators too (28 returns, 671 yards). Etienne was Florida’s top player in terms of rushing touchdowns (8), yards per carry (5.7) and yards per game (68.4) last season. He was named to the 2022 SEC All-Freshman Team. Both seasons, however, he was forced to split carries with Montrell Johnson. Now, he’s the top Dawg in Athens.
