Game Balls: Georgia standouts from 48-7 win over UT-Martin
Few would argue with the notion that Georgia could have played a lot better in its season opener vs. UT-Martin. Sure, the Bulldogs gained 559 total yards and that’s more than in 12 of their 15 games last year, but it was sloppy at times.
WR Mekhi Mews: What’s up with that walk-on program at Georgia? Mews looked fantastic and it shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who read DawgsHQ during preseason camp. He has been trending up since spring drills. He did a nice job on both kick and punt returns while catching all three of his targets for 75 yards and the first touchdown of his career. It was a huge game for the Central Gwinnett High School product.
S Malaki Starks: The former five-star prospect did some things really well on Saturday that he struggled with a season ago. Starks took excellent angles to the football and did a fantastic job of getting his man on the ground. He led the team with eight total tackles as the Skyhawks attacked the edges all game. He also had a pass breakup on a pass that he almost picked off.
TE Brock Bowers: Georgia’s No. 1 offensive weapon scored the first touchdown of the season. It was on a jet sweep handoff from three yards out. It was his 23-yard catch and run that got that scoring drive started and he ended up catching five passes for 77 yards. Bowers did have his first career fumble but it wasn’t lost thanks to Arian Smith’s awareness, but even with that tiny blemish, it was a fantastic day for the All-American.

DB Tykee Smith: There was a point early on in the game when the offense was scuffling and the defense was missing it’s chances to make big plays behind the line of scrimmage where Smith was the lone bright spot. He was flying around and making plays. He ended up tallying six total tackles in the contest and had Georgia’s first tackle for loss of the season.
RB Roderick Robinson: The freshman from Southern California will always remember his first college game. He scored his first career touchdown in the contest ripped off a 23-yard run. Robinson finished the game with eight carries for 50 yards and he looked more and more comfortable as the game went on.
DE Mykel Williams: Georgia had just one sack on the day and it went to Williams. UT-Martin head coach Jason Simpson said afterward that he knew he couldn’t allow his quarterback to hold the ball or it would mean trouble. Still, Williams was able to make something happen in the first quarter when he pushed the pocket and drug the quarterback to the ground with one arm. That was his lone tackle of the day but, for the second year in a row, Williams tallied the Bulldogs’ first sack.
