Game Balls: Georgia scuffles way to 39-22 win over Kent State
ATHENS, Ga. — Use whatever adjective you want to describe the 17-point win Georgia got over Kent State on Saturday. The word sloppy definitely applies. You could also call it ugly or unimpressive. We’ve probably used all of those at this point.
The fact remains that Georgia got a win and it is now 4-0 on the season. It beat Kent State without a lot of guys playing their best ball but there were a few Bulldogs who really came to play. Below, DawgsHQ hands out game balls to UGA’s best of the best.
TE Brock Bowers: No Bulldog is more deserving than the sophomore tight end. He got things off to a great start with a 75-yard touchdown run on UGA’s second play from scrimmage. Bowers had another rushing touchdown in the game and made a couple of nice catches. His blocking on the perimeter was also a big help to an offense that had a hard time getting out of its own way at different points.
ILB Jamon Dumas-Johnson: We saw shades of Georgia’s linebackers from the 2021 season in the first half. Dumas-Johnson was all over the field and if whoever he struck quickly went to the ground. He finished with six tackles (all solo) with two sacks and three tackles for loss. The second half wasn’t quite as productive but he had an excellent game overall.
RB Daijun Edwards: Georgia hasn’t been getting much after contact this season but Edwards tried to remedy that in the second half. Kent State had a tough time getting him on the ground. Edwards carried the ball 12 times and picked up 73 yards. He played a key role in the final Georgia touchdown of the day.

DL Bear Alexander: We first noticed the true freshman defensive tackle in the first half when he came up with a nice tackle in short yardage. Alexander continued to get meaningful snaps throughout the game and flashed later on in the game with a pass breakup at the line of scrimmage. Georgia needs some young defensive linemen to step up and Alexander appears to be headed in that direction.
ILB Jalon Walker: There was plenty of buzz about the true freshman linebacker in during preseason camp but we hadn’t yet seen it on the field. Walker made a splash in the game on special teams when he broke through in the first quarter and blocked a Kent State punt. The ball rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
PK Jack Podlesny: UGA’s sloppy play forced Podlesny into more action than Kirby Smart would have liked, but he came through. He made field goals of 39, 31, and 32 yards. Podlesny also kicked off really well.
