ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia didn’t have a single evening kickoff at home in 2022 but it will have at least two in 2023. The SEC announced on Monday that Georgia vs. UAB on September 23 will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

It’ll be the second matchup between the Bulldogs and Blazers in the past three seasons. The two teams squared off exactly two years ago today, September 11, 2021. It was Stetson Bennett‘s first start and game action of the 2021 season and he went off with five touchdown passes as Georgia routed UAB 56-7. Bennett completed 10 of 12 attempts for 288 yards that day and it was a precursor of things to come.

J.T. Daniels, the starter in the 2021 season opener vs. Clemson, missed the game due to a core muscle injury. He returned the following week as Georgia took down South Carolina and played again the next week against Vanderbilt. But when Daniels was unable to go in week five against Arkansas, Bennett took over the job and never let it go, leading Georgia to consecutive National Championships.

The Blazers are currently 1-1 on the season with the loss coming to a Peach State program. They beat North Carolina A&T in week one but they fell to Georgia Southern in week two. That game was shootout with the Eagles winning 49-35. UAB will travel to Louisiana this Saturday with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET

Georgia is 2-0 on the year with two blowout wins. UGA took down FCS opponent UT-Martin 48-7 in the opener. It then beat up on Ball State by a score of 45-3 in week two behind a 31-point second quarter. UGA is holding strong at No. 1 in both the coaches and AP polls through the first three releases of the season. The Bulldogs will begin SEC play this Saturday against South Carolina with kickoff set at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

The game with UAB will be Georgia’s fourth straight home game to start the 2023 season. That streak will end the following week when the Bulldogs make the short trip to take on Auburn, which is 2-0 on the season after a 14-10 win over Cal.

Georgia is 3-0 all time against UAB. The first matchup was in 2003 when UGA, coming off an SEC Championship season, got all it could handle. Georgia won 16-13 that day. The next showdown came three years later when the Bulldogs took care of business with a 34-0 win.
