Kirby Smart gives latest on Jalen Carter, other Georgia injuries
ATHENS, Ga. — Vanderbilt stands between Georgia and its 2022 bye week and the Bulldogs are still pretty banged up. Kirby Smart met with reporters Tuesday evening where he gave an update on Jalen Carter and a number of other UGA players.
Smart told reporters after Tuesday’s practice that Carter hasn’t returned to practice. He’s improving but he isn’t yet taking reps in practice or participating in drills.
Carter hasn’t been full speed since the first game of the season. He sustained an ankle injury against Oregon and was limited for the next three games. He appeared to be on track to play a high number of snaps at Missouri before he became the victim of an uncalled illegal chop block. He suffered a sprained MCL in his left leg on that play and hasn’t practiced since.
Sophomore wideout AD Mitchell, who battled an ankle injury but is now dealing with a thumb sprain, hasn’t looked as good to Smart this week as he did during Georgia’s pregame warmup before Auburn. Smart mentioned adrenaline as a potential reason for Mitchell looking better during pregame warmup.
MItchell has been out since the first play of the Samford game. He picked up four yards on a quick screen but limped off the field after the play.
Georgia inside linebackers Smael Mondon (ankle) and Trezmen Marshall (knee) are also still limited. Smart says that Mondon is doing about the same things that he did last week when he “struggled” through the first two practices of the week and wasn’t able to get much work in. Marshall is getting loose and doing what he can for now, but Smart says that he has looked better than last week. Neither of those guys were able to contribute as Georgia took down the Tigers on Saturday.

Mondon suffered the ankle in the Missouri game. He missed a portion of that game but was able to return and finish it, appearing on first and second down in each of Mizzou’s final two possessions. Marshall filled in for Mondon in that game but Smart mentioned afterward how the fourth-year junior was basically playing on one leg.
According to the Georgia head coach, Kendall Milton is “probably probable” for the Vanderbilt game. He’s dealing with groin injury sustained during the Auburn game. Smart added that he isn’t sure if Milton will play vs. the Commodores but indicated that he’d be available.
Milton entered the Georgia vs. Auburn game as the Bulldogs’ leading rusher. He had just two carries for 13 yards in that contest, allowing Daijun Edwards to surge ahead by one yard.
Georgia vs. Vanderbilt will kick off at 3:30 p.m ET. It’ll be the Bulldogs 2022 homecoming game and the Commodores’ first trip to Sanford Stadium since 2018. The game will be aired on The SEC Network.
