Kirby Smart gives abrupt response on Javon Bullard, AD Mitchell
Georgia has been without sophomore wide receiver AD Mitchell since week two. It could be down a defensive starter when it travels to Kentucky this weekend with Javon Bullard getting hurt against Mississippi State.
Mitchell has been asked about in meetings with Kirby Smart at least once a week, often times more, since his injury. Bullard’s injury is more recent but Smart has been asked about him every time he has met with reporters since Saturday.
Smart was asked again on Tuesday and he wasn’t in the mood to say much about it.
“Yeah I’m hopeful for both of them” Smart said. “Keep asking, I keep telling.”
In Mitchell’s one full game of action this season, he hauled in four passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. That was in the season-opening blowout of Oregon. As a true freshman in 2021, AD Mitchell hauled in 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns.
“It’s been frustrating for him,” Smart said at Georgia vs. Kentucky media day. “He wants to get back. He works really hard at it. He was better last week than he’s been every week previous. He actually got to do individual drills last week and did some things. But he’s still not, or at least last week, I don’t know where he is this week because I haven’t seen him yet, but he was not where he could come out of breaks and do the things required to play receiver, and that’s tough. So he stayed here. He got extra rehab here, felt like he got a little better rehab here not having to be on it all weekend and during the game. So we’re, again, hopeful to get him back this week, but it will be day by day.”

Javon Bullard had four tackles including two solo stops in the win over Mississippi State. On the season the Milledgeville, Ga. native has played in nine games, starting six, and has 29 total stops. Over the last three games he has 19 including a team-high and career-best eight tackles against Florida. The week after in Georgia’s win over Tennessee, Bullard had seven stops highlighted by a pair of quarterback sacks and a pass breakup.
“Played really hard. Tackled well. He’s physical and he’s passionate about playing the game,” Smart said last week. “He didn’t play perfect, now. He grabbed and held a couple times and got called. But he played hard. He understood the game plan and he executed it.”
Georgia and Kentucky will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The Bulldogs are going for their 19th straight regular season SEC victory. A win would also give Georgia 26 straight regular-season wins dating. Both of those stats date back to the 2020 season.
