ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia is, record wise, off to a perfect start in 2023. The Bulldogs are 3-0 with UAB coming to town for the fourth straight home game to begin the season. It’s also the team’s third non-conference came outside of the Power 5. It’s pretty clear to those who’ve seen the team this season that the Bulldogs are a work in progress.

They’ve managed to score just 10 points in the first quarter this season and they trailed 14-3 vs. South Carolina last week before kicking it into gear. Georgia scored 21 points in the first 21 minutes of the second half and beat the Gamecocks 24-14.

The point spread is very large for this upcoming game. Georgia is the 41-point favorite over UAB according to Draft Kings. It was favored by 27 over South Carolina this past week. Before the Bulldogs begin the week of practice, they’ll hold media day. DawgsHQ is in attendance and we’ll be providing updates from what Kirby Smart has to say. Use the refresh button on your browser and look in the space below to see what the eighth-year head coach has to say.

*** “Ron (Courson) informed me that we have the longest injury list since I’ve been here,” Smart says. He says that he thinks it’s a theme across college football, but UGA has more than it has ever had.

*** Smart says that he doesn’t have a personal relationship with Trent Dilfer but he has a great deal of respect for him as a football coach. He mentions how Eddie Gordon, a support staffer at UGA for the past few years, is at UAB and does a great job.

*** When asked about Carson Beck, Smart mentions that his quarterback is extremely composed and he’s happy with that. He talks about how Beck handles positive and negative about the same although he did notice some celebration after a touchdown on Saturday.

*** Smart indicates that he’s disappointed with Georgia’s red-area offense and defense. He mentions how you have to be able to run the ball and stop the run. He points to the offensive issues come from not being productive on first down. The first-down plays aren’t positive.

*** Amarius Mims will have “tight rope” surgery to correct a high-ankle sprain. He’s going to be out for awhile. Smart says that Austin Blaske (knee) will be able to practice today but he’s not sure how soon he will be back to full speed.

*** Smart says the offense this year is the exact same offense UGA has been running in previous years. The plays are the same. The red zone execution hasn’t been good and they have to get that fixed, but they’re doing pretty much the same stuff offensively and Beck is growing.

*** Smart says that he’s unsure if Xavier Truss will continue playing right tackle with Dylan Fairchild at left guard. It depends on who is healthy and how guys practice but he compliments Truss on how he jumped in and played right tackle last week.

*** I asked Smart about the perception that taking some shots gets Beck going. He says that’s not his perception or reality. He says that Beck is one of the best he’s seen at seeing the coverage and knowing where to go with the football.

*** Smart says that Kendall Milton is dealing with a sprained MCL injury and Roderick Robinson is dealing with a high-ankle sprain. Smart says that he’s not sure what either player will be able to do this week.

*** Javon Bullard is “day-to-day” this week. Smart says he was close to going last week. He says that Ladd McConkey is “more than likely out this week.” Says Pearce Spurlin is out for now and they aren’t sure when they will get him back.
