ATHENS, Ga. — Preseason camp is well underway at Georgia. The Bulldogs got going on Thursday of last week and they’ve practice every day since. The team worked in helmets only for the first two days and since they’ve been working through padded practices.

Kirby Smart spoke with reporters the day before it all got started and Tuesday is a chance to talk to some assistant coaches. Defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann will talk to reporters on Tuesday. He’ll be joined by special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Todd Hartley.

In the space below, DawgsHQ will be providing live updates from each coach. Just use the refresh button on your browser to see what those coaches have to say.

Glenn Schumann…

*** Press conference opens with a question about players being hard to block. He mentions Chaz Chambliss and how strain and effort has a lot to do with getting off blocks. Chambliss has that.

*** Schumann is asked about game-planning and how Georgia gets it’s plans into place. He likens it to being a chef with a bunch of ingredients. It’s like putting together a meal with the best ingredients.

*** The interview with the Philadelphia Eagles this winter is brought up and how he keeps up with those players in Philly. He says he does the best job he can to keep in touch with those guys. Calls it an honor for the Eagles to have reached out to him with interest but says that he’s glad to be where he is right now.

***Schumann is asked about Jalon Walker and his work as an EDGE player. He mentions how a lot of other inside linebackers have gotten the opportunity that Walker has but we just haven’t seen it as much on game day. Says Walker is headed into year two and they want to expand what he can do.

*** Again, other coaching opportunities are brought up. Says it’s his responsibility to take care of his family and give them a chance to thrive. He says he’s extremely happy at UGA and his family is too. Says he doesn’t need to chase happiness because he has it at Georgia.

*** “I’ve been incredibly pleased with Pop (Jamon Dumas-Johnson)” during camp thus far. Says his leadership and preparation has been excellent. Says Smael Mondon is limited right now but he’s working extremely hard to get back — doing everything he can.

***”The thing about a standard is you have to uphold it every single day,” Schumann says. Also says that they are constantly measuring things and assessing to make sure it is being met.

*** Schumann is asked about the ILB Olympics. Says it’s important to him because he was a coaches kid and the guys his father coached were his heroes. Schumann enjoys the fact that his kids get the same experience with the Georgia inside linebackers who are “larger-than-life” guys. Says it’s just as cool to see off-field coaches like Juwan Taylor and Blaine Miller bring their kids and have the same experience.

*** When asked about having a bunch of role players who can do certain things, Schumann says, “You have to have a home base.” He says guys have to have a speciality or primary role to improve upon. You don’t want to pigeon-hole a guy into a certain spot because the opponent will pick up on stuff like that.

*** I asked about the young outside linebackers, Schumann says consistency is a major factor on who can help out there. Schumann says there’s a long way to go for everybody in that room and that he’ll be better able to answer that question in a few weeks.

Todd Hartley…

*** Hartley comes in talking pretty fast. Says that there’s a meeting at 1pm and he’s anxious to get to it. Said Schumann talked so much that his time got cut from 15 to 10 minutes.

*** Hartley says he has been a Georgia fan his whole life. Knew he wanted to be at UGA and thought he’d come here and be a high school coach. Called Mark Richt the greatest personal influence on his life and gave him a chance to be a student assistant. Went to WVU then came back to coach at UGA. Worked with Willie Martinez and Todd Grantham then on to Doc Holliday at Marshall. Whole time he was stuck on defense and he wanted to be on offense.

*** “Recruiting is a group effort and it starts with the head coach. There’s not a better recruiter in the country than Kirby Smart,” Hartley says. He credits Smart and the Georgia brand with making recruiting much easier.

*** Lawson Luckie had a “very good spring,” according to Hartley. Says he has been impressed with the progression of Luckie and Pearce Spurlin. Mentions how Spurlin was nervous about playing tight end because he played receiver in high school.

*** “What a blessing,” Hartley says when asked about working with Todd Monken. Then mentions how great it has been to work with Mike Bobo, who has been a big influence on his life. Hartley’s wife was actually Bobo’s nanny back in the day.

“I think coach Bobo understands what coach Smart wants,” Hartley says. He says that whether it’s Bobo or Monken, both know what the head man wants and both know how to make it happen.

*** “He’s such a special kid,” Hartley says on Bowers, “…Any box you create, he checks it.” Hartley says he’s the first guy at breakfast, first guy in a meeting, first guy in a spring, first at everything. That’s just who he is. “He’s the ultimate competitor,” Hartley says.

Hartley mentions how he needs to see Oscar Delp get reps. He needs to see other guys get reps but when Bowers has to give up reps, he gets “pissed off.” Bowers will ask what he did wrong. “I just try not to mess him up.”

*** On Oscar Delp, Hartley says he’s very proud of how far he has come. “He put himself in a position to contribute last year.” Even from the Ohio State game to now, Delp has experienced “exponential” growth. Says Delp understands the void left by Darnell Washington and has attacked his ability to block and fundamentals.
