ATLANTA — It’s about that time. No. 3 Georgia and No. 11 Oregon are getting ready to kickoff their 2022 seasons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in a matchup that pits Kirby Smart against his former pupil, Dan Lanning.

“Excited to get game week going, game week prep,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in his opening statement of Oregon week on Monday. “Camp kind of came to end last week for us. I thought we had a really good football camp in terms of physicality, practice, and during the heat. I am really pleased with how hard our guys have worked and strained. It’s not easy to be a football player in the fall because you don’t get to do much but practice every day for three and four hours in the heat and school is not here, people aren’t on campus, and all that has changed now. I am pleased with what our guys have done up to this point.”

I’m pleased with where we are, and it’s time to lock in and finish up the prep we got started last week. Probably a little bit Wednesday, a little bit Thursday, and then all in Friday, Saturday, Sunday off, and then getting back to the grind for the players,” he continued. “We know we got a really good program. Mario Cristobal is a good friend of mine and he’s done a great job recruiting players to Oregon, and Dan (Lanning) has taken those guys, and watching what they did in the spring game, and knowing the intensity and the organization and the leadership that Dan has, they’re going to be a hell of a team. They’ve got a lot of good football players on their team.”

Leading the Georgia offense into the 2022 season is quarterback Stetson Bennett. A sixth-year senior from Blackshear, Ga., Bennett announced his decision to come back to Athens for his final year of eligibility and another shot at glory. That was on the heels of winning Offensive MVP in both of Georgia’s College Football Playoff wins last season – the Capital One Orange Bowl over Michigan and National Championship Game against Alabama – as Bennett threw for a combined 537 yards and five touchdowns in those two games.

Around Bennett are plenty of weapons too. Kenny McIntosh and Kendall Milton look to carry on the tradition of Georgia as ‘RBU.’ A.D. Mitchell made arguably the biggest catch in Georgia Football history last season as a freshman to give the Bulldogs the lead in the National Championship. He’s back for a second season along with last year’s SEC Freshman of the Year Brock Bowers who led the team in all three major receiving categories. Needless to say, there’s reason to be excited about Georgia on the offensive side of the football.

Meanwhile, on defense, some are concerned. Georgia lost eight players – including five first rounders – from an NFL record-breaking draft class that saw 15 Bulldogs selected. That’s leaving plenty of spots up for grabs and competition for playing time across the field. Still, Jalen CarterNolan Smith and Kelee Ringo give Georgia an All-American caliber player at every level of the defense while others like Zion LogueJamon Dumas-Johnson and Kamari Lassiter look to break out.

DawgsHQ has boots on the ground in Atlanta and will keep you updated with the latest from The Benz.

It’s been 45 years since the last time — the only time — that the Dawgs and Ducks met on the football field. Georgia won that one 27-16. Jeff Lewis intercepted Oregon quarterback Tom Cafferty with the Ducks holding a 13-12 lead and set up the go-ahead score. Willie McClendon, who’s serving as an honorary captain for Saturday’s contest, added the clinching score. So, after all that waiting, let’s see what’s in store for us today. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Also saw some Malaki Starks on the series in DIME package.
  • Georgia has won the toss and deferred. Oregon will begin with the ball.

PREGAME

  • Xavier Truss and Tate Ratledge appear to be your starting guards at left and right respectively. Full offensive line groupings… First Team: Broderick Jones, Truss, Sedrick Van Pran, Ratledge and Warren McClendon; Second Team: Austin Blaske, Devin Willock, Warren Ericson, Jared Wilson and Amarius Mims; Third Team: Earnest Greene, Drew Bobo, Griffin Scroggs, Dylan Fairchild and Chad Lindberg. Did not see Jacob Hood dressed out. Other offensive linemen included Aliou Bah and Chris Brown (walk-on).
  • Interesting numbers from a couple of the specialists… Jack Podlesny was in No. 96 after we had heard he would change to 99. Odd because Zion Logue – also No. 96 – was on the field goal protection team. Also, Brett Thorson, previously listed on the roster as No. 99, is wearing No. 92.
  • Arian Smith was off of crutches unlike the last time I saw him. Quarterback-Center pairing were what you would expect. Sedrick Van Pran, Warren Ericson, Austin Blaske, Griffin Scroggs and Drew Bobo were the centers (in that order) working with Stetson Bennett, Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff, Gunner Stockton and Jackson Muschamp (also in that order).
  • Malaki Starks, Branson Robinson and Cole Speer all freshmen that were working with the punter returners. Kearis Jackson, Kenny McIntosh, Adonai Mitchell, Mekhi Mews, Dominick Blaylock, Daijun Edwards and Ladd McConkey as well.
  • Couple of observations from down on the field
  • Specialists are out on the field in full uniform. Block numbers lookin’ good…
  • Georgia players have started to take the field with the wide receivers, tight ends catching passes with support staffers. Earnest Greene also on the field doing some light jogging beside Scott Sinclair.
  • We got our first glance at a Georgia depth chart this season thanks to the flip cards in the press box. While it’s titled “Unofficial Depth Chart,” it at least gives us a good idea of who could be lining up in the respective spots.
