Georgia at Kentucky: Major Matchups
No. 1 Georgia is at Kentucky this weekend and the Bulldogs have a chance to go 8-0 in the SEC for the second straight season. It’s going to take a strong effort to properly handle a ticked off Wildcat team and below, DawgsHQ breaks down the matchups that mean the most.
Georgia defensive backs vs. Kentucky wideout Barion Brown
The freshman wideout is explosive. He’s a really good football player who hasn’t yet learned how to be consistent. Make no mistake, however, the play-making aspect of his game is there and ready to roll at a moment’s notice. He’s the type of athlete that can give a talented Georgia defense problems.
Georgia has been challenged by good wideouts this season. Brown is as physically gifted as any of them but the Bulldogs are no stranger to big-time playmakers.
DawgsHQ’s Take: We all watched the Tennessee game over a week ago. Georgia can handle the challenge. Dane Key and Tayvion Robinson are good running mates but the group, as a whole, doesn’t present the same threat. Especially when compare the quarterbacks.
UGA offensive line vs. Kentucky OLB Jordan Wright
This is the guy who could give the Georgia offense a headache. He’s not a great pass rusher but he’s really good at snuffing out the run and getting offenses behind the chains. Wright has also deflected his fair share of passes up front.
The Georgia offensive line has done a really nice job the second half of the season. It has been physical and focused in its pass protection. The run game is also more consistent, for the most part, because Georgia is doing a good job of cutting off penetration.

DawgsHQ’s Take: The Bulldogs have to find this guy and get a hat on him. Wright has the talent to create a couple of turnovers and keep this a low-scoring game to give his team a shot. Georgia should, however, have a plan.
Georgia front seven vs. Kentucky run game
Kentucky needs to run the ball to win this game. If it can’t, it has almost no shot, even at home. It’s not going to be an easy task. Georgia has one of the nation’s top run defenses. It has done a really nice job of slowing UK’s ground game down in past meetings.
But we can all agree that Wildcat running back Chris Rodriguez is a big-time player. Georgia is going to have to play gap-sound football down after down and it hasn’t really had to do that this season.
DawgsHQ’s Take: The Bulldogs may have gone this far without having a game like this in the trenches, but they’re also built for it. Georgia will get to spend some time in true 3-4 personnel and there will be some collisions. UGA should be on the winning end of a lot of those.
