Georgia is now the nation’s No. 1 team in both major polls. The latest USA Today coaches poll has the Bulldogs leaping over Alabama for the No. 1 spot with 40 first-place votes. That’s 15 more first-place votes than last week.

Alabama ranks No. 2 with 24 first-place votes followed by Ohio State at No. 3, Michigan at No. 4, and Clemson at No. 5. Oklahoma, USC, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, and Arkansas round out the top 10, in that order.

Georgia is now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the SEC after traveling to South Carolina in week three and leaving with a 48-7 victory. The Bulldogs scored 24 points in each half against the Gamecocks, reaching the end zone on their first three possessions of each half as well.

South Carolina was the first team to reach the end zone against Georgia in 2022. It did so with less than a minute to go in the game and against the reserve Bulldog defense.

“I thought we challenged our guys to come on the road and play really physical,” Smart said after the game. “Attack from the get go. We talked about not treading water when you come in. You come in here to be the attacker and to hunt and not be hunted. I thought our kids bought into that. They wanted to get on it from the jump. They wanted to be physical from the jump. I thought we had some opportunistic stops on defense again and I thought our offense was explosive and executed well.  We worked on the perimeter and up inside. It makes it tough to defend when the quarterback when you run and do things like Stetson.

“I was proud of the composure the kids showed in the opening drive of the second half. It meant a lot to me. We had a penalty and started backed up. All I wanted to see was come out in the second half and close the door. I thought they did that well. I thought our guys responded in the heat and played well in the heat. I appreciate how hard they worked to put us in the situation.”

Georgia has outscored its opponents in 2022 by a combined score of 130-10. It is allowing just 3.3 points per game it is scoring over 43 points per contest.

The SEC has four teams inside the top 10 of the latest coaches’ poll with Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky and Arkansas. Tennessee is No. 12 followed by Ole Miss at No. 13. Texas A&M is at No. 20 and Florida is at No. 22, giving the league eight teams in the top 25.

Next up for Georgia is a home game against Kent State. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET on The SEC Network.
