Food always has a way of grabbing people’s attention, and that’s certainly the case on the latest episode of “Behind the G” featuring the nutrition team. Director of Football Nutrition Collier Madaleno and her staff have gotten praise from players for years. Now they receive the recognition to the public from the Georgia Football social media squad.

“I am in charge of everything when it comes to nutrition, so a lot of what I do revolves around meals,” Madaleno said. “A lot of things in the game of football you cannot control, but how you eat and how you hydrate, you have full control over. So we teach our athletes how to do this the right way. We teach them how to have a competitive advantage over our competition.”

Madaleno and her team got a huge upgrade recently with the opening of Georgia’s football’s own restaurant, “Bones.” The state of the art area allows players to customize what they would like to eat on tablets for chefs to prepare. There’s also a buffet area and grab-and-go items around the addition to the new facility.

“We wanted Bones to kind of feel like a sports grill, hang out spot,” Madaleno said. “We really want it to be a place where the guys can come together, sit together, relax and eat together.”

“What it’s done is it’s really created a good space for us where we can sit and eat with out athletes,” she continued. “That’s so important on connection, but that’s important with helping them on live meal coaching and things like that to help them really make the right decisions.”

Madaleno and her staff also get hands on with the players with their cooking classes. By demonstrating to the players healthy yet yummy foods, the Bulldogs know what to consume when they are away from the facility too.

“The cooking demonstrations are so much fun. The guys have a big time whenever we do it. It kind of gets their hands dirty and teaches them how to do something themselves.”

Madaleno has been with the program since 2019 after previously serving in a similar capacity at Florida. Since then, she’s not only been able to help so many student-athletes, but also build relationships with them.

“I know when an athlete walks in exactly what he’s probably going to put on his plate,” Madaleno said. “That’s so helpful to know those details because it helps them sometimes to feel like at home.”

“One of my favorite parts of my job is when you have an athlete that buys in and sees the results,” she continued. “Getting to hear those results and those little things that they start to focus on that can really have an impact in their day to day lives and practices, it’s very rewarding.”
