The SEC Championship is the one box the Bulldogs didn’t check off a season ago. They jumped out to a 10-0 lead over Alabama but the Crimson Tide struck for 24 points in the second quarter and 17 more in the second half to beat the Bulldogs 41-24.
Georgia went on to get revenge in Indianapolis in the National Championship game. The Bulldogs got into the playoff despite losing in the league-title game. They beat No. 2 Michigan in the Orange Bowl to advance to the National Championship. It took down top-seeded Alabama by score of 33-18 for the programs first National Title in 41 years.

Kirby Smart has gotten his team to the SEC Championship game in five of his seven seasons as the head coach, missing it in 2016 (his first season) and 2020. Georgia beat Auburn in its first trip by a score of 28-7. It lost to Alabama the following season in Atlanta by a score of 35-28.
LSU was Georgia’s opponent in 2019 and the Tigers couldn’t be stopped, beating UGA 37-10. Then there was last year’s loss to Alabama.
“It’s more about checking a box. It’s not about last year’s team or a comparison. It’s about that next step and having an opportunity to put a number on the wall that stays there forever,” Smart said when asked if there’s any added motivation for this year’s team in the fact that they were able to accomplish so much last season but came up short of winning an SEC championship. “It’s an SEC Championship. You don’t belittle those. Those are hard to come by. They’re what you do what you do for. There’s such a respect, especially in this part of the country, for the Southeastern Conference, that winning a Southeastern Conference championship is extremely impressive for the quality of football and the number of NFL players that come out of our conference. I think our players take a lot of pride in that.”
