A Georgia football Thanksgiving: all meat, some stuffing

Georgia football fans have more to be thankful for than ever this Thanksgiving. Take a moment to appreciate the Dawgs this turkey day.

Maybe the people at your table are fellow Bulldogs.

Perhaps they aren’t as fortunate, and happen to pull for Auburn, Tennessee or Alabama instead.

I don’t recommend letting any of your Georgia Tech relatives fix you a drink. Keep your cup in your hand at all times for that gathering, if it applies to you.

No matter who happens to be at that table, you probably care about most of them.

The fact that I’m able to write this, you’re able to read it, and we’re all able to share another day of naps and meats and sides with the people the Lord placed in our lives makes me smile.

But admit it, ya turkey

You’re incredibly grateful for where your football team is this season.

And no matter how many things deserve your gratitude, I presume that the Georgia football Bulldogs rank high on the list right now.

We put together our own little compilation here at DawgsHQ.

It is neither comprehensive or exhaustive. I know we missed some. But the ones we did include are as legit as my mom’s macaroni and cheese.

Glenn Schumann may not be the main dish, but he’s a hell of a Georgia football side item

The legacy hire of Kirby Smart’s Georgia staff earns his keep year in and year out.

As DawgsHQ senior editor Jake Rowe pointed out, he develops all of the Dawgs’ linebackers beyond their wildest dreams.

He has a solid little crew of elite talent eyeing Athens, Georgia, right now, too.

And his co-coordinated defense alongside Will Muschamp is once again among the tops in the nation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to set aside some Georgia gratitude for Glenn Schumann.

Stetson Bennett IV received all of the jeers for coming back in 2022

And I don’t know that all of the people who doubted him will have the convictions to change their tune on him now.

Not even Georgia football fans can agree on how they feel about The Mailman.

But the man’s story is insane.

Even if you still think Bennett is holding Georgia back (respectfully, I disagree, despite his lack of touchdowns this season), his unlikely path deserves appreciation.

He’s going to make everyone nervous several more times before his Georgia career is done.

But he could be making a whole lot of Dawgs much, much happier in the next month-plus as well.

Bennett’s resolve to come back after leaving junior college – even when Georgia’s coaches didn’t give him a shot to start – is enough to make Dawgs fans thankful for a long, long time.

Kirby Smart is the best coach in America right now

I can’t express enough how impressive Smart’s culture movement is.

Maybe he launched it just to keep his team together in the NIL’s Wild West. I’ll hear out your cynical, skeptical arguments on that front.

Maybe he truly believes in it.

Maybe it’s both.

Whatever the intent, the outcome is nothing short of amazing in this individualism era.

Smart truly has a team that cares about the team more than any single accolade. It’s more impressive to me than anything his Dawgs do on the field this year.

Which leads me to the final course in this Georgia football Thanksgiving feast

This team is a team for the ages.

Yes, it has Jalen Carter.

Of course, Brock Bowers deserves all of the individual accolades he gets.

But even without AD Mitchell, Todd Monken’s offense is among the nation’s best.

Carter missed significant action throughout the season’s first act. The Dawgs didn’t skip a beat. Just think about how may dudes you have to have on the defensive line for that to be the case.

The ‘glue’ holding this team together is rare

Even more rare than 15 NFL Draft picks, and a walk-on, National Championship quarterback.

These Dawgs will hunt.

And they aren’t done yet. Not this season, and certainly not after it.

Can your Auburn and Alabama and Tennessee relatives say that with as much certainty as you can, and actually believe it? Bless their hearts.

You didn’t leave your drink unattended near your Tech nephew did you? I tried to warn you.

Pick out a fresh glass. Get something cold or strong or both and have a toast to College Football. We all love it.

It’s just more fun to love it when your team’s the best one there is.
