The SEC is moving to 16 teams in 2024 with the additions of Texas and Oklahoma and Georgia will get one of those teams in year one. Chip Brown of Horns247 is reporting that the Bulldogs will travel to Austin in 2024 to take on the Longhorns.

This comes a year after Georgia was supposed to travel to Oklahoma. The Bulldogs had the Sooners scheduled for the front end of a home-and-home in 2023, but the SEC forced the cancellation of that game with OU joining the league in 2024. Georgia wasn’t set to host Oklahoma until the 2031 season in that agreement, which is why the SEC forced the cancellation.

The rest of the 2024 SEC slate, which will feature eight games for now, will be announced Wednesday evening. The league recently announced that it would use an eight-game slate for the 2024 season but it did not commit to a format beyond that.

Georgia vs. Texas is coming early…

The report suggests that Bulldog fans will get an earlier trip to Austin than they thought a few years ago. In 2018 the two programs announced a home-and-home series with Georgia traveling to Austin in 2028 and Texas returning the favor in 2029.

It hasn’t yet been announced but that game is certainly on the chopping block considering the Longhorns are now in the league and will be on rotation.

Georgia also has two separate home-and-home series scheduled with Clemson as well as a neutral site game with the Tigers to kickoff the 2024 season. That will be in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game.

The Bulldogs are also set to play Florida State, Louisville, UCLA, and Ohio State in home-and-home series in the next 10 years.

“Our fans want that—I want that,” Kirby Smart said of playing big non-conference games. “It generates a lot more excitement, and you recruit off that. You go and get to sell the opening game, playing in big-time games. I think that’s important. As far as the philosophy, us playing more SEC games if that happens, so be it. It’s not going to change our philosophy as far as what we do non-conference. We had already moved to that before the realignment. We were already trying to schedule big games every year, and that’s just the way that we think is best.”

The history…

There have been five matchups in the storied history of the two programs. Texas has won four of those games with the most recent being a 28-21 win over the Bulldogs in the 2019 Sugar Bowl. Georgia won the previous matchup in the 1984 Cotton Bowl by a score of 10-9.

The previous three games all took place befor 1960 with the Longhorns winning in Austin in 1958, in at Atlanta in 1957, and in Miami in 1949.
