Georgia holds in top spot of Week 10 coaches poll
Georgia is now 8-0 after taking down Florida 42-20 in Jacksonville on Saturday. It’s the Bulldogs seventh win this season of 17 points or more and the USA Today Sports AFCA coaches poll still has Kirby Smart and company at No. 1.
Georgia had 43 first-place votes last week and they gained two more this week to make it 45. Ohio State is No. 2 with 13 top votes while Tennessee is at third with five top votes.
Michigan comes in at No. 4 and Clemson rounds out the top five. Alabama is No. 6 followed by TCU, Oregon, USC, and Ole Miss to round out the top 10. Ole Miss making it back into the top 10 gives the SEC four in that group. LSU comes in at No. 17 and Kentucky is at No. 24 following a loss to Tennessee. Georgia has two of those ranked SEC teams, Tennessee and Kentucky, left to play in 2022.
Georgia gaining serious control of Florida rivalry…
The win over Florida gave Georgia its fifth in the last six games of this rivalry. The Bulldogs are on the kind of run the late Vince Dooley was in the 1970s and 80s.
“Well, it’s hard to win any series in the SEC you know, especially when you’re talking about a top program in the country,” Kirby Smart said after the game. “I mean, you know, I don’t look at it as runs — I look at it as each individual year, you know? I mean, I still think we should have won the year we lost here. That’s the game that probably haunts me the most is that we didn’t play worth a crap two years ago here, and if you wonder why and you worry about each individual year. You don’t worry about runs, and Billy’s going to do a great job. He already is because he’s recruiting hard, and those guys didn’t stop. They didn’t quit fighting now. They came out the second half and answered the bell.”

Prior to Kirby Smart’s arrival at Georgia, the Bulldogs had one three game win streak against the Gators since Dooley left his post as head coach back in 1988. Florida, under Steve Spurrier, dominated the series in the 1990s and kept it going when Urban Meyer became head coach.
If you take this rivalry back to that aforementioned three-game Georgia win streak from 2011 to 2013, Georgia has won eight of the last 12 against its border rival to the South. Smart is 5-2 against Florida as Georgia’s head coach.
The Bulldogs have a showdown on tap this Saturday. They’ll host No. 3 Tennessee at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. CBS will televise the game as its SEC Champ of the Week.
