Georgia is traveling today for its 2022 SEC Opener against South Carolina. The Bulldogs will make the short trip over to Columbia to take on a 1-1 Gamecock team.

When SEC teams travel within the league, the roster limit is lowered to 70 players. DawgsHQ has checked with some trusted sources and below we share what we’ve learned about which Georgia players will travel to South Carolina.

Georgia players we’re told did not make the trip…

We’ll start with sophomore wide receiver AD Mitchell. We’re told that he is not traveling to Columbia and that would cement his status for Saturday’s game. He suffered an ankle injury on UGA’s first play from scrimmage against Samford and did not return. Once he came out of the injury tent, he went into the locker room and didn’t come back out to join his teammates on the sideline. Kirby Smart labeled him doubtful earlier this week. We also don’t expect to freshman speedster C.J. Smith in uniform for this game.

A pair of defensive backs will also be staying back in Athens. Redshirt freshman Nyland Green, who is battling a hamstring injury, isn’t expected to be in Columbia. He missed last week’s game as well. We’re also told that William Poole, a fifth-year senior, will not make the trip. His absence is not believed to be injury-related at this point.

Georgia is traveling four or five tight ends to South Carolina but redshirt sophomore Arik Gilbert is not one of them. He has played in each of Georgia’s first two games but based on what we’ve heard, he will be present for this one. Smart was asked about Gilbert earlier this week.

“It’s really based on Arik’s performance… It’s all based on how he practices and carries out the game plan,” Smart said after Tuesday’s practice.

It sounds like the Bulldogs will be taking three quarterbacks to South Carolina. Former Gamecock pledge Gunner Stockton, per the info we’ve gathered, will not be traveling.

UGA players of note we expect to travel…

We’re told that a few of freshmen who have played very little or none at all will make the trip. Offensive lineman Earnest Greene, who has been battling a hamstring injury, is expected to travel.

We also expect to see freshman outside linebacker Darris Smith in uniform along with freshman wideout Cole Speer. A trusted source also tells DawgsHQ that walk-on running back Cash Jones will be in Columbia along with true freshman Branson Robinson and UGA’s three primary tailbacks — Kenny McIntosh, Kendall Milton, and Daijun Edwards.

On defense, we’re told that a pair of true freshmen linemen will be available. Bear Alexander and Christen Miller are expected to travel. True freshman defensive end Mykel Williams, who has started both games this season, will obviously be there as well.
