Georgia is 3-0 after a win over Kentucky but a bigger test awaits the Bulldogs this Saturday. UGA will need a better performance if it wants to enter next week still undefeated because a trip to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide is on deck for the Dawgs.

It’s a rematch of the 2023 SEC Championship Game, one which Georgia lost to be left out of the College Football Playoffs, and the seventh matchup between the two programs since Kirby Smart took over as head coach in Athens. This one will without a doubt look different though as Kalen DeBoer, not Nick Saban, is on the Alabama sideline. Saban announced his retirement in January and DeBoer was brought in from Washington.

“I mean, they’re different defensively, for sure. Obviously, the offensive staff and defensive staff changed, but there’s remnants because the quarterback’s the same, so you keep some things the same with them,” Smart told reporters on Monday when asked about the schematic changes he’s seen from Alabama this season. “Most of college football is doing something similar, so there’s some similarities into that. Obviously, the history there, Kalen’s history, that’s at Washington, and then defensively, history Kane (Wommack) has and what they’ve done this year as well, it’s different.”

As for an overlap with last year’s game, Smart understands there’s only so much value to looking at that tape. He’s coaching a different team at Georgia and it’s an entirely different staff at Alabama. Yes, some players remain on both sides, but history can be thrown out the window for the most part.

“Do you look at last year’s game? Well, you always look at things like that from a personnel standpoint, matchup. You see guys in there, that game, our game, that overlap,” Smart said. “We go through and critique those and then try to get better at the tendencies and the things we have to. We look at future opponents and Alabama was a future opponent, but it wasn’t the same staff as it was prior to that.”

All-time, Alabama is one of few teams that can claim an advantage over Georgia. The Crimson Tide have won 43 of the total 73 matchups including eight of the last nine. The Bulldogs’ lone victory in that stretch came during the 2021 season in the National Championship as revenge for a loss handed to them in the conference title game.

The Bulldogs will enter Tuscaloosa as slight favorites, being listed with an advantge of anywhere between 2.5 to 1.5-points on various books. It’s the first time since 2007 the Crimson Tide are home underdogs. The over/under for the game is available at 48.5 according to VegasInsider.

Having won 42 straight regular season contests, the second-longest streak all time behind Oklahoma of the 1950s, ESPN Analtics gives UGA just a 34.5% chance of keeping that streak alive another week.
