It’s game day in the Classic City and for the first time in 2022, an SEC opponent awaits on the other sideline of Sanford Stadium. No. 2 Georgia takes on unranked Auburn in the 127th meeting all time between the two programs, a rivalry game that’s become known as the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.
“I will open with the tradition and history of this game is pretty incredible. I think when you talk about one of the oldest rivalries in college football, it’s always been a game that I know, as a player, I looked forward to playing in,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said about Auburn ahead of the matchup. “It’s been some tremendous games between the two teams, and our guys are looking forward to getting to play at home in front of a raucous crowd, great atmosphere. I’m expecting our fans to turn out and give us an electric atmosphere to play in against a good Auburn football team.”
All time, Georgia holds the lead in this series. While the Tigers won the first meeting back in 1892, the Bulldogs have won the last five, dating back to the 2017 SEC Championship Game, to give them a 62-56-8 advantage. Last year, Georgia won what was a top-25 matchup at the Tiger on The Plains 34-10. The Bulldogs have won the last seven games in Athens and 14 of the last 17 overall. Needless to say, they’ve taken a hold of this series and Kirby Smart and company will look to continue that this week.
