LIVE UPDATES: Georgia Tech 3, No. 7 Georgia 0 - 2Q
ATHENS, Ga. — It might sound normal, but it’s Friday (?!?) in Athens and Georgia is taking the field tonight. The seventh-ranked Bulldogs host rival Georgia Tech for the 118th all-time meeting in the Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate series.
Kirby Smart’s squad enters the game at 9-2 on the season, finishing up SEC play with a 6-2 mark. While a couple of losses might come across as disappointing to some, it was good enough to secure Georgia a spot in the SEC Championship against a to-be-determined opponent. The Bulldogs will square off in Atlanta with a spot in the College Football Playoffs on the line next week against the winner of Saturday night’s Texas-Texas A&M game.
As for Georgia Tech, Brent Key has the Yellow Jackets going bowling for a third straight season. Sitting at 7-4 as they make the short trip to Athens with a win over CFP hopeful Miami under its belt already, there’s nothing more Georgia Tech would love than to knock off the in-state rival.
“We are on to Georgia Tech. We got started on them yesterday, which was like a Monday, which was very unique for us, because it was not Monday. But it was like a Monday in terms of practice for us and moving things up.Of all the years we’ve been here, I think this is the first time we’ve had kind of a different schedule, timeline schedule like this,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said on Monday with a short week of work coming off of a game last Saturday. “Our guys are excited. This is a huge matchup. This is an interstate rivalry game that’s been part of history for a long, long time and it is a physical game. It was a very physical game last year. It’ll be a physical game this year. I’m excited to be at home on Friday night, and looking forward to our crowd impacting this game. We need them to impact this game, because we do have it at home.”
Georgia has won six straight in the rivalry with the lone loss under the direction of Smart coming in his first season on the job. UGA has won all but three since 2000 including last season’s 31-23 victory over Tech in Atlanta. All-time, the Bulldogs hold a 71-41-5 advantage over the Yellow Jackets with the first meeting coming in 1893.

Former Bulldogs making impact for Tech…
11/29/2024 07:24:20 PMGeorgia Tech has a couple of former Bulldogs on the roster. So far we’ve seen EJ Lightsey and Ryland Goede make big plays. Lightsey brought Nate Frazier down short of the line to gain on 3rd & 1 while Goede just opened the second quarter with a 25-yard gain into UGA territory.
END 1Q: Georgia Tech 3, Georgia 0
11/29/2024 07:19:34 PMAnother Tech drive starts with a big play. This time it’s a run by Jamal Haynes for 22 yards, reversing the field and getting a big block from his quarterback. Will be Yellow Jacket ball at the GT36 when play resumes.
Georgia can’t convert…
11/29/2024 07:18:27 PMGeorgia gets stopped on 4th & 1. Nate Frazier taken down for no gain after no gain on 3rd & 1 as well. Drive saw one fourth down conversion, but the Bulldogs can’t come up with another. Tech takes over at its own 14.
Couple of Bulldogs Back in Action…
11/29/2024 07:10:28 PMWe’ve seen wide receiver Dillon Bell and running back Roderick Robinson both in action already. Bell (ankle) just picked up a first down on his first grab since an injury against Tennessee. Robinson carried it twice before that on the drive.
Tech turnover on downs!
11/29/2024 07:09:59 PMAfter a Georgia three-and-out, Tech used another drive opening big play to get into UGA territory. Another first down got the Yellow Jackets to the 34, but the Bulldogs get a fourth down stop at the 25 as Raylen Wilson brought Jamal Haynes down for a loss. Georgia takes over at the 26.
Big Play Sparks Scoring Drive…
11/29/2024 07:10:26 PMJamal Haynes took the first play from scrimmage 44 yards to the UGA 31. Georgia Tech was able to convert a third down a few plays later, but the opening drive stalls and the Yellow Jackets settle for a field goal. 31-yard kick by Aidan Birr is good.

Captains and Coin Toss
11/29/2024 06:35:41 PMCaptains for Georgia: Carson Beck, Chaz Chambliss, Tate Ratledge, Smael Mondon
UGA wins the toss and defers its decision. Bulldogs will begin kicking it left to right…
Warmups are underway
11/29/2024 05:56:34 PMCouple of notes for the early stages of warmups. Banged up wide receiver Dillon Bell is fielding kicks with Georgia’s return men. Bell left UGA’s win over Tennessee with an ankle injury and did not dress last Saturday against UMass. Being back in uniform is at least a step in the right direction.
Defensive lineman Christen Miller is among the Georgia players not dressed out tonight. He’s the most newsworthy but joined by Trevor Etienne, Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, Chauncey Bowens, Marcus Harrison and Kris Jones. Bowens has a boot on his left foot – a new injury since Georgia’s game last Saturday.
Meanwhile on the Georgia Tech end of things, the participation of quarterback Aaron Philo is being monitored. The first-year from Bogart has played in four games and participated in another would burn a year of eligibility. With starter Haynes King banged up, the Yellow Jackets have used both as of late.
