ATHENS, Ga. — It’s Saturday in Athens! No. 5 Georgia (4-1, 2-1 SEC) meets unranked Mississippi State (1-4, 0-2 SEC) in a battle between the two teams with claim to the name of Bulldogs in the SEC.

“Our guys have gotten back hard to work the last couple days and excited about having another home SEC game, which seems like we haven’t had any in forever, but we’ve got them here back to back,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said this week. “I’m looking forward to playing Mississippi State, long time rivalry, and got a lot of respect for Jeff Lebby and the job he’s done there. And looking forward to playing those guys at home.”

All-time, Georgia owns a 20-6 record against Mississippi State including wins in the last four meetings. UGA clinched the SEC East with a win in its last matchup with MSU, claiming a 45-19 victory in Starkville as part of the perfect 2022 season. Stetson Bennett accounted for four scores while Ladd McConkey had a pair. Meanwhile, in the last game played between the two programs in Athens, JT Daniels passed for 401 yards as he made his first career start at UGA in 2020. None of that matters today as the Bulldogs battle between the hedges…

*** Mississippi State goes down the field in under two minutes. Using the help of a timeout, the two-minute stoppage and a fourth down conversion, Michael Van Buren and the Bulldogs go 75 yards down the field for the score. It’s capped off by a 35-yard connection to Kelly Akharaiyi. (UGA 41-31 1:47 4Q)

*** Trevor Etienne was initially stopped but pushes his way into the end zone. Offsetting penalties after the play. PAT by Peyton Woodring is good. (UGA 41-24 3:33 4Q)
*** Beck’s third down pass attempt to Oscar Delp is incomplete. Georgia will stay on the field to go for it on 4ht & Goal.
*** Another Frazier carry, this time for 1 yard, and another Mississippi State timeout. 3:42 to go. UGA ball at the MSU1.
*** Nate Frazier carries for a gain of 2 yards. Timeout Mississippi State with 3:46 to go.
*** After two more first-down pickups, Carson Beck completes to Dillon Bell for a gain of 21, getting UGA to the MSU 4-yard line. With that completion, Beck ties a school record of Eric Zeier (2x) and Cory Phillips. He also passes a career-high for passing yards with 459.
*** UGA has moved the chains twice on third down, getting into Mississippi State territory just after the second.
*** Georgia takes over at its own 19 after the punt.

*** Penalties back Mississippi State up. False start and a holding make it 3rd & 16. MSU can’t convert and will punt.
*** Traore picks up another first time, this time on 4th & 2. He gained 11 on the completion from Van Buren, advancing into UGA territory.
*** Mississippi State moves the chains on the first play of the fourth quarter. Michael Van Buren completed to Seydou Traore for a gain of 14.

Third Quarter

*** Michael Van Buren keeps for a gain of two yards on the final play of the third quarter. Mississippi State will head to the fourth with possession, trailing by two scores, 2nd & 8 upcoming. (UGA 34-24 END 3Q)

*** Carson Beck pass attempt to Arian Smith falls incomplete on third down after a loss of a yard on second down. Brett Thorson comes on to punt for the first time today. Other UGA drives have ended either in points or a turnover (plus the missed field goal at the end of the half).
*** Dominic Lovett across the middle picks up 19 yards out near midfield. Can’t quite bring in the next pass to him on the following play.

*** Georgia forces 4th & Goal but Michael Van Buren finds Davon Booth for the touchdown. PAT is good. Two-score game with 2:40 to go in the third. (UGA 34-24 2:40 3Q)
*** Davon Booth rushes for a gain of 18 and it’s goal-to-go.
*** Mississippi State is threatening. Michael Van Buren completes a pair of passes for first downs, the second of them for a gain of 42 yards to the UGA 25 as he connects with Kevin Coleman. Play stands after review.

*** Carson Beck intercepted at the goal line. Second interception of the day. Just his second career game with multiple interceptions, the previous one being against Alabama.
*** Anthony Evans gets the drive going with a 52-yard rush on the first play. Taken out of bounds at the MSU 23.

*** Johnnie Daniels races into the end zone from 19 yards out. PAT is good. (UGA 34-17 8:27 3Q)

*** Arian Smith is back, and he’s into the end zone. Carson Beck finds him 42 yards downfield to cap off a 3-play 75-yard drive. Touchdown Georgia! Smith sets a new career-high for receiving yards with that grab, his fifth of the day. 134 yards tops the 132 he had against Alabama. (UGA 34-10 13:48 3Q)

*** KJ Bolden with his first career interception on 3rd & 10. Georgia will take over with 27 seconds to go at its own 19, likely just taking a knee to take it to the half.
*** Mississippi State picks up first downs on back to back plays. Michael Van Buren scrambled for a gain of one on 3rd & 1 before finding Kevin Coleman for 11 yards the play after.

*** Carson Beck fakes the handoff and finds Lawson Luckie in the end zone for the touchdown. Georgia came out in a goal line formation with Micah Morris as the fullback. Touchdown Georgia! (UGA 27-10 1:56 2Q)
*** Georgia down to the MSU 1 after Carson Beck completes to Oscar Delp. Bulldogs snapped it directly to running back Cash Jones, handed off to Beck as he rolled right and faked a reverse to Dominic Lovett. That’s the final play before the two-minute timeout.
*** Carson Beck completes on play action to Arian Smith. That play picks up 55 yards to the Mississippi State 25. He’s helped off the field by the UGA training staff though as it looked like he fell awkwardly on his side making the diving catch.

*** Three plays later Georgia does get off the field. UGA to take over at its 20 after the punt.
*** Georgia was going to get off the field in three plays but Damon Wilson is flagged for a roughing the passer penalty. Kirby Smart not happy with him.
