After beating Oregon last Saturday in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game and rising to No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches polls, Georgia Football takes to Sanford Stadium this week for its home opener against Samford. In what is a ‘Battle of the Bulldogs,’ Kirby Smart squares off against the coach that gave him his first full-time job in College Football, Chris Hatcher. It’s also Smart’s father’s alma mater.

Nobody is expecting Samford to even come close in this game. Vegas Insider has Georgia as a 52-point favorite. But don’t tell Kirby Smart that. He’s not happy with the way his team has practiced this week. Is he just hard to please, or have the Bulldogs been reading too much of their own hype this week online? Either way, Smart will want to see a strong performance out of his group to follow up one last week.

“Looking back at the tape, I think it’s never as good as it seems and it’s never as bad as it seems. And that’s kind of the mantra coaches use,” Smart said on Monday during his opening press conference of Samford week. “To be honest, it’s true. So it’s never — you know, you go to the tape to watch it and you think you played really good, and you see glaring mistakes and errors that you made that you got away with. It brings you back to reality really quick on Saturday night and Sunday morning when you watch that tape. But I was pleased with the way our players went about the connection piece. We challenged them to stay connected and be connected. There was a lot of examples of guys celebrating other guys’ plays. So I thought that was awesome from our guys. Now it’s moving on to a guy I know a lot about and a program I have a lot of respect for. And he’s done a tremendous job everywhere he’s been. And it’ll be a challenge for us getting ready for Samford at home on Saturday.”

Georgia and Samford met during the 2017 season, the only time they’ve played in program history. UGA won 42-14.
