It’s time for some SEC football around these parts as Georgia opens conference play against South Carolina on Saturday. The Bulldogs, 2-0 on the season and ranked No. 1 in the country according to the AP Poll, travel into Columbia as 24.5-point favorites over the host Gamecocks.

“It’s on to South Carolina for us, an SEC East rival that we get to play each and every year,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said on Monday ahead of this week’s matchup with South Carolina. “Going into an extremely tough environment to play in with a lot of guys that haven’t played in any kind of environment like that. You know, the Mercedes game (Oregon) was probably 70/80 percent Georgia fans. So it will be our first chance to play on the road, first chance to play SEC opponent. And looking forward to an opportunity to play these guys.”

For the second time this season, Smart goes up against a former assistant of his from his time at Georgia. Shane Beamer has South Carolina off to a 1-1 start to the 2022 season after leading the Gamecocks to a 7-6 finish and a bowl game win in his first year on the job last year. Beamer was a member of Smart’s first staff in Athens and spent two years coaching in the Classic City.

“When I hired Shane, I’d known him for a long time. He was interested in coming and I thought it would be a great opportunity to jump into SEC and be part of our program, and he did,” Smart said. “He’s created a lot of energy through his program through enthusiasm, their staff, they have an excellent staff at South Carolina. And just creating an environment of competition for their program to compete at a high level. Which South Carolina’s always historically played Georgia, you know, really hard. It’s usually the first SEC game most years. They recruit our state hard. We recruit their state hard. So there’s a lot of things to that.”

Looking at those that’ll be on the field for Saturday’s SEC showdown, South Carolina is led offensively by transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler. The former five-star has the Gamecocks ranked top 25 nationally for passing yards per game. However, their run game hasn’t been quite as strong, nor has their run defense, which is ranked No. 129 out of 131 FBS programs across the country. Rattler is one of eight transfers that South Carolina took during the offseason including leading receiver Antwane Wells.

As for Georgia, the Bulldogs rank No. 2 in the nation for passing yards per game and No. 1 for defensive points allowed. Quarterback Stetson Bennett has thrown for 300 yards or more in each of his first two outings this season while the defense has yet to give up a touchdown, notching their nation-leading ninth shutout since Kirby Smart arrived in Athens this past Saturday.

All time, Georgia has a 53-19-2 record against South Carolina. The Bulldogs are 22-10-2 in Columbia having won all three matchups there under Kirby Smart.
