KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — It’s a Saturday in the fall, and you know what that means: time for Georgia Football. Today, the Dawgs hit the road to Tennessee as they take on the Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

“We’re on to Tennessee,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said this week. “It’s a really difficult prep week, probably the hardest one of the year in terms of trying to replicate what they do. They do a tremendous job, stressing you in all phases. They’ve always been good with Josh (Heupel) in terms of offensively, but I think what they’ve been able to do defensively this year, to me, is really impressive. They play really good defense, really good offense. The tempo is hard to match.”

“And then their special teams, you know, that’s the phase nobody talks about. These guys are really elite on special teams. You can tell they put a lot of time and effort into it. So, it’s a huge challenge. When you go on the road in the SEC, I say it all the time. Doesn’t matter who, where, when. Doesn’t matter anything about anybody’s record. Only thing that matters is you’re playing on the road in the SEC in a really tough environment, and the prep for that is kind of the challenge that our team has to embrace. You have to embrace — it’s different when you go on the road in our league, especially when you go to play a team as talented at Tennessee is.”

A top-20 battle, this one has some serious significance – even with the SEC East already clinched. A Georgia win would tie the Bulldogs for the league’s all-time longest winning streak at 28 straight games. The record is currently held by Alabama, both in 1978-80 and 1991-93.

There’s also implications for the College Football Playoffs. Georgia moved up to No. 1 in the most recent set of rankings released on Tuesday, but the path to the Playoff still is up int he air. In all likelihood, a win in the SEC Championship Game over Alabama is necessary, but chaos could easily ensue around the country.

Pregame

  • Georgia wins the toss and defers. Dawgs will kick right to left.
  • Captains for Georgia: Ladd McConkey, Tate Ratledge, Zion Logue and Smael Mondon
  • Defensive lineman Warren Brinson does not appear to have made the trip. That feels unexpected, but Kirby Smart told us he’s been dealing with a calf strain. For a full look at the travel roster, click here.
  • Amarius Mims appears to be back in the starting lineup. He’s working with the first team offensive line in warmups. Still Dylan Fairchild at left guard.
  • Wide receiver Ladd McConkey spent a little bit of time in the injury tent last week. He met with reporters afterwards and said he was okay. Seen today going through warmups without any restriction.
