LIVEUPDATES_UGA

ATLANTA, Ga. — We’re in Atlanta today for the 2024 SEC Championship Game, a fourth straight and seventh in the last eight years to feature the team from just down the road in Athens. No. 5 Georgia takes on No. 2 Texas for the conference crown as the Bulldogs try to win a third under Kirby Smart while it would be a first in the first year in the league for the Longhorns.

These two teams met in October with that one going the way of UGA. Meeting on October 19th in Austin, Georgia handed Texas its lone loss of the year with dominant 30-15 win. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 23-0 and rolled thanks to seven sacks including a combined five from Jalon Walker and Mykel Williams, Daylen Everette having a hand in two turnovers and Trevor Etienne finding the end zone three times.

That game doesn’t mean much today. Ask Kirby Smart about it and he’s ready to act like it never even happened. The ninth-year head coach understands that how things played out in one game isn’t necessarily indicative on how they’ll play out another time. He’s got two rematch wins after losing the first matchup in his time at Georgia that go to prove exactly that.

“Our guys are excited to return to Atlanta and one of the most iconic games there is of championship games. I think when you look over the history of this game, it’s got a great tradition, a great atmosphere. I know having coached in it a lot of years between Alabama and Georgia it’s absolutely an incredible atmosphere. It’s two teams battling for a conference championship, which has alluded many teams in this conference,” Smart said. “With the new teams in our conference, the strength of this thing is just incredible, and to look at an opportunity to play for the championships of this conference, it’s really a special moment. You know, so many fan bases are tied to Atlanta. The fact that it’s held in Mercedes, it’s just such a good venue. And now we look forward to games after that as well in the college football playoff, which is new. So it should be a great atmosphere.”

“Texas has got a super-quality team. I have so much respect for Sark for the rivalry game they played in (Saturday). It was a extremely physical game for them, emotional game for them,” he added. “Their team has really navigated the SEC really well, especially on a first-year team coming in. He built the roster to be SEC compatible, and they’re extremely big and physical across both fronts. And they have experience at a multitude of positions, and they’ve got a great team. So it’ll be a great challenge for us, and we’re looking forward to playing there in Atlanta.”

Georgia is an underdog to Texas, just the third time since the start of the 2021 season that the Bulldogs have been getting points in Vegas. The line sits at 3 points in favor of the Longhorns per VegasInsider at the time of publication.

UGA 22, TEX 19 – FINAL (OT)

Gunner Stockton shows off his toughness…

12/07/2024 06:59:17 PM

Fresh set of downs for the Longhorns…

Headed to overtime!

12/07/2024 06:43:08 PM

Georgia hands it off, and we’re headed to overtime… Second straight overtime game for Georgia, beating Georgia Tech last Friday in eight overtime sessions. Let’s see how long this one takes!

Bert Auburn ties it…

12/07/2024 06:40:48 PM

The 37 yard attempt by Auburn is good and we’re tied up with 18 seconds left.

Timeout UGA: Georgia 16, Texas 13 (22 seconds)

12/07/2024 06:40:12 PM

Quinn Ewers threw incomplete on both second and third downs. That’ll bring on the field goal team for Bert Auburn, kicking from 37.

Timeout Texas: Georgia 16, Texas 13 (29 seconds)

12/07/2024 06:37:25 PM

Longhorns got 15 free yards on a Daylen Everette pass interference. On the next play, ewers is sacked for a loss of 5 yards by Mykel Williams.

Timeout UGA: Georgia 16, Texas 13 (41 seconds)

12/07/2024 06:37:32 PM

Georgia got Texas into a 4th & 3 with pressure on third down, but the Longhorns convert as Quinn Ewers finds DeAndre Moore. Quintrevion Wisner rushes for 6. It’s 2nd & 4 from the UGA 29 with 41 seconds to go.

Two-Minute Timeout: Georgia 16, Texas 13

12/07/2024 06:27:42 PM

Longhorns have it near midfield, their 47, facing a 2nd & 8. Two timeouts remaining for Texas. Georgia has all three.

Disaster for the Dawgs…

12/07/2024 06:25:19 PM

Gunner Stockton panics with pressure in his face, and Georgia turns it over for the first time today. Texas will have it at the TEX 34 after the return by Jahdae Barron with 2:30 to go.

Timeout Texas: First of the Half

12/07/2024 06:22:19 PM

Georgia got backed up by a holding penalty called on Jared Wilson. It’ll be 3rd & 13 for the Bulldogs from the TEX 31 with 2:38 to go, ahead 16-13.

ANOTHER EVERETTE INTERCEPTION!

12/07/2024 06:18:30 PM

After A tackle for loss by Chaz Chambliss and a Mykel Williams sack, Texas faced 3rd & 17. Forced to go to the air, Quinn Ewers is interception for a second time today by Daylen Everette, who had a hand in a pair of turnovers in the first matchup with the Longhorns. UGA takes over at the 28 with 3:25 to go.

Georgia regains the lead…

12/07/2024 06:13:12 PM

Georgia’s offense found some momentum after the fake punt conversion and moved the chains four more times. That gave UGA 1st & Goal from the 4 but the Bulldogs can’t punch it in and settle for the field goal instead. Peyton Woodring makes from 21 yards out.

UGA 16, TEX 13 – 4:32 4Q

FAKE PUNT!

12/07/2024 06:02:03 PM

Georgia looked like it was going three-and-out, but the Bulldogs run a fake punt. Offensive lineman Drew Bobo catches the direct snap, flips to Arian Smith and he gains 9 yards on 4th & 5 from the UGA 30.

Touchdown Texas…

12/07/2024 05:56:20 PM

It’s off the races a few plays after the quarter break. Quinn Ewers completed to Matthew Golden for 25 before finding DeAndrew Moore for 41 yards on a 3rd & 3. That’s their sixth and seventh plays of 20 yards or more today. We’re tied up…

UGA 13, TEX 13 – 13:54 4Q

END 3Q: Georgia 13, Texas 6

12/07/2024 05:53:20 PM

Lot of Georgia fans here as we head to the fourth quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Texas has it facing a 2nd & 8 from its 27 when play resumes.

Georgia extends its advantage…

12/07/2024 05:49:05 PM

A 48 yard rush by Trevor Etienne got the drive going, and Georgia was able to extend its lead to a touchdown with an eventual 24-yard field goal by Peyton Woodring (with his third-string holder FWIW). UGA had goal-to-go from the 4, but the Bulldogs are forced to settle.

UGA 13, TEX 6 – 0:22 3Q

MISSED AGAIN!!!

12/07/2024 05:39:19 PM

After Bert Auburn made his first two attempts, he’s missed his last two. The latest was from 51 yards out and came after a 6-yard, third-down sack of Quinn Ewers by Damon Wilson. That’s an 11th tackle for loss on the game for Georgia. Bulldogs take over at their 34 after the missed kick, still ahead by four.

Georgia goes three-and-out…

12/07/2024 05:33:54 PM

Second drive not quite as successful for Gunner Stockton. A loss of 7 yards on the first play leaves Georgia facing an eventual 3rd & 10. Stockton got sacked and fumbled, but the ball rolls out of bounds. Texas then takes the punt 26 yards to the UGA 39 to regain the momentum.

UPDATE: Georgia punter Brett Thorson banged up on the punt coverage. Not only is he huge in special teams, but he’s also the backup holder for Carson Beck.

Pressure forces a punt…

12/07/2024 05:28:42 PM

Georgia gave up a first down on the opening play after the kickoff, but the Bulldogs brought down Quintrevion Wisner for a loss on back to back plays before pressuring Quinn Ewers into an incompletion. UGA ball at its 33 yard line after the punt.

TOUCHDOWN GEORGIA!

12/07/2024 05:20:57 PM

After the first half didn’t see a trip to the end zone by either team, Gunner Stockton leads Georgia down the field on the opening drive of the second frame. The backup quarterback completed 3-of-4 passes for 36 yards, and the drive was capped off by Trevor Etienne plunging into the end zone from 10 yards out. Bulldogs take the lead…

UGA 10, TEX 6 – 10:27 3Q

Gunner Stockton converts early third down…

12/07/2024 05:15:35 PM

The UGA backup finds Arian Smith for 18 yards on 3rd & 2. First time he’s been in a game without a lead of less than 21 points. Of course Georgia trails 6-3 as the third quarter begins.

Carson Beck Update…

12/07/2024 05:08:29 PM

The Georgia quarterback has emerged out of the locker room holding his helmet but not running onto the field. Meanwhile, each of the UGA backups are throwing. Looks like it’ll be Gunner Stockton trying to lead the come from behind effort for the Bulldogs who begin the second half with possession. He follows that up with another using his legs on a 3rd & 1.

HALF: Texas 6, Georgia 3

12/07/2024 04:50:25 PM

Was a weird ending to the half. Georgia picked up a pair of first downs and was aided by a pair of penalties against Texas. Working against the Dawgs though was the clock as they didn’t get time back on the plays the Longhorns were penalized.

On the final play of the first half (1 second remaining, UGA ball at the TEX 42), Carson Beck tried to throw to the end zone but was hit and fumbled. Texas recovered and returned it into UGA territory – eventually fumbling and getting nothing out of it – but the story of it was Beck’s health. He was helped off the field by trainers as the teams headed to the locker room, appearing to hold his arm/hand while also limping.

Georgia to get it back…

12/07/2024 04:37:46 PM

Texas moved the chains on the play after the timeout, but a holding penalty with a fresh set of downs puts the Longhorns with a long way to go to the first down marker. Georgia gets off the field, using one timeout, and takes over possession after the punt with 39 seconds at its 26.

Two-Minute Timeout: Texas 6, Georgia 3

12/07/2024 04:31:06 PM

Texas converts on 3rd & 4 from its 25 with a completion to DeAndre Moore. Play gains 7 yards and brings us to the two-minute timeout. Longhorns have it at the 32 with all three timeouts remaining. UGA also sitting with all three in its back pocket.

Georgia goes three-and-out…

12/07/2024 04:27:00 PM

Third time today Georgia’s run four or fewer plays. Bulldogs haven’t had a drive that lasted longer the 3:50. A first-down run and a pair of incompletions. Texas takes over at its 19 with 3:37 remaining in the first half after a Brett Thorson punt.

MISSED KICK!

12/07/2024 04:21:47 PM

Georgia gave Texas every opportunity there, getting flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty after a 20-yard catch and dropping what would’ve been an interception by Daniel Harris, but the Longhorns can’t cash in as Bert Auburn misses from 42 yards out. Happened after a 5-yard false start penalty backed him up some.

UGA takes over at its 24 with 4:36 to go, having all three timeouts plus a two-minute timeout remaining. Getting it after the half as well, Georgia’s got an opportunity here…

Bulldogs on the board…

12/07/2024 04:12:26 PM

Georgia found some success getting the ball to its tight ends as Carson Beck completed to Ben Yurosek for 19 and Oscar Delp for 11. Bulldogs were also able to get better push on first down and stay in manageable second down yardages, but the drive stalls with a drop on 2nd & 5 and a nearly intercepted pass on third down. Peyton Woodring makes from 44 yards to get UGA on the board.

TEX 6, UGA 3 – 6:41 2Q

Longhorns add another field goal…

12/07/2024 04:02:09 PM

Bert Auburn is 2-for-2 on the day as he bangs home a 42-yarder. Texas converted a 4th & 1 with some trickery, snapping it through Arch Manning’s legs to Jaydon Blue. He picked up the necessary yardage, but with a fresh set of downs, the Bulldogs got the Longhorns behind the sticks. A third down pass to DeAndre Moore goes for 17, but it’s 9 yards short of the line to gain.

TEX 6, UGA 0 10:22 2Q

END 1Q: Texas 3, Georgia 0

12/07/2024 03:52:24 PM

Texas moved the chains two plays after regaining possession thanks to a combined 15 yards from Quintrevion Wisner. A Chaz Chambliss sack helped Georgia get the Longhorns into a 3rd & 15 however, but Quinn Ewers is able to find Matthew Golden for 32 yards. He gained 50 on a 3rd & 14 earlier in the game.

That’s the final play of the first quarter… Texas has it at the UGA 37 when play resumes.

Another Bulldog punt…

12/07/2024 03:45:11 PM

It wasn’t a three-and-out, but the only way Georgia moved the chains was on a pass interference penalty. Bulldogs get behind the sticks with the fresh set of downs and don’t do anything. Dillon Bell couldn’t haul in a quick slant to him on 3rd & 9. Texas takes over at its 20 after Brett Thorson’s punt rolled into the end zone for a touchback.

Georgia has run 7 plays for 9 yards on offense. On the ground, that’s -6.

Texas takes early lead…

12/07/2024 03:35:44 PM

With a pair of TFLs on first and second downs, Georgia had Texas in 3rd & 14 from its own 9, but the Longhorns break free for a big play. Quinn Ewers found Matthew Golden open downfield to pick up 50 and avoid the three-and-out.

The Longhorns had another big play with 22 yards to Isaiah Bond, but he’s called for offensive pass interference later on in the drive. Texas forced to settle for the field goal.

TEX 3, UGA 0 – 5:17 1Q

Georgia can’t take advantage…

12/07/2024 03:26:15 PM

Three plays and it’s off the field for the Bulldogs. Carson Beck completed to Ben Yurosek (2) and Arian Smith (7), but he is stopped short of the line to gain on 3rd & 1. Georgia lined up and tried to draw Texas offsides. Longhorns didn’t bite, and instead, the Bulldogs take a delay of game and punt.

INTERCEPTION!

12/07/2024 03:23:05 PM

Georgia forced four turnovers last time against Texas, and the Bulldogs have one of the first drive of the game. Daylen Everette comes up with a tipped ball. Longhorns moved it into UGA territory, but the Bulldogs will take over after the interception at their own 33.

Captains and Coin Toss…

12/07/2024 03:08:37 PM

Captains for UGA: Carson Beck, Tate Ratledge, Jalon Walker, Mykel Williams

As the lower-seeded team, Georgia calls the toss. Dawgs win the toss and defer the decision to the second half. Texas to start with it moving right to left on your screen.

Trevor Etienne Update…

12/07/2024 02:49:23 PM

Etienne was running with Georgia’s first team offense during 11-on-11 drills. Didn’t look limited. Either Georgia is playing mind games with Texas or he’s going to give a go. Should find out early on in this one.

Game Time Decisions…

12/07/2024 02:36:30 PM

Paying attention to Christen Miller and Branson Robinson as Georgia’s two game time decisions. Both have worked with assistant coaches as opposed to a player partner during RB and DL drills. Miller has a shoulder brace on his left arm.

Pregame Warmups…

12/07/2024 02:32:03 PM

Georgia RB Trevor Etienne did warm up with the returners during initial drills. He’s done that when healthy. Interested to watch him as warmups continue. An interesting note from the defensive side of the ball: Jalon Walker spent time with the outside linebackers. That’s not something I’ve normally noticed. He had three sacks last time these two played. Kirby Smart has spoken about how having Smael Mondon available frees Walker up to do more as an outside linebacker. Interested to see how much run he gets on the edge today.

Injury Updates…

12/07/2024 01:52:06 PM

About 90 minutes out from kickoff, the pregame availability report has been posted. For Georgia, RB Trevor Etienne and RB Chauncey Bowens are not listed at all after being “questionable” throughout the week. That would seem to indicate they are available. Other updates are as follows…

DL Joseph Jonah-Ajonye – OUT
RB Branson Robinson – GAME TIME DECISION
DL Christen Miller – GAME TIME DECISION
