It wasn’t pretty but Georgia won its fifth game of the 2023 season on Saturday. It came from behind twice and topped Auburn 27-20 inside Jordan Hare Stadium. It wasn’t an impressive win as the Tigers just haven’t been very good, but it didn’t result in the Bulldogs falling in the latest coaches poll. Georgia lost a couple of first-place votes but they remain in the top spot.

Michigan is No. 2 followed by Ohio State at No. 3, Texas at No. 4, and Florida State at No. 5. Penn State is ranked No. 6 followed by USC, Washington, Oregon, and Alabama to round out the top 10. Future UGA opponents Ole Miss and Tennessee come in at No. 15 and No. 18, respectively. The Bulldogs next opponent, Kentucky, is ranked No. 20 while Missouri is No. 22.

The Bulldogs trailed Auburn 10-0 in the first quarter on Saturday. It tied the game in the second quarter but then fell behind by seven more in the third at 17-10. Two turnovers led to the Tigers’ only two touchdowns on the day.

But the Bulldogs fought back after going down a full score in the second half, going on a 17-3 run to win the game. Still, Kirby Smart knows his team has a long way to go if it plans on feeling like it did at the end of the past two seasons.

“I’m proud of ’em. Resilient as hell, competed,” Smart said after the game. “You know, the leadership of this team has shown up twice, and you don’t know how many times you’re going to be able to do that when you turn the ball over and you give people extra possessions. You just can’t do that. Good football teams don’t do that, and good football teams don’t let people run the ball for over 200 yards. That’s one of the things that we knew they could do well. I thought they really ran the ball well and used the quarterback and rushed the ball on us. We can’t do that. We’ve got to be able to run the ball, too, but I’m proud of the way the guys fought.”

Georgia and Kentucky will play this Saturday with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised by ESPN.
